Peanuts have always posed a serious risk for babies with peanut allergies, but a groundbreaking new program aims to transform allergy care. 🤝John Hunter Children’s Hospital is one of 10 paediatric hospitals to have partnered with the National Allergy Centre of Excellence (NACE) and the Murdoch Children's Research Institute - MCRI to introduce the first nationwide peanut oral immunotherapy program. 🥜Babies with a peanut allergy will be offered oral immunotherapy, to help them build a tolerance to peanuts and potentially achieve remission. The free program is available to babies under 12 months, diagnosed with a peanut allergy, and who are under the care of an allergist at one of the participating hospitals. Did you know that CCD-specific IgE antibodies are detectable in more than 30% of pollen allergic individuals? They frequently yield misleading results in serological allergy diagnostics when allergen extracts are used. At Cincinnati Children's, VigiLanz Pharmacy Surveillance software helped clear allergy labels, identify patients who could benefit from testing to re-exposure, and overall, reduced costs of length of stay. Using the software's filters, notifications, and reporting functions, the hospital’s Pediatric Antibiotic Allergy Testing Services (PATS) team built a registry of children that might benefit from the additional penicillin allergy testing. With this approach, PATS helped clear 74 out of 78 identified penicillin allergy labels, consistent with industry research that more than 95% of children who have experienced penicillin-associated reactions can tolerate penicillin in the future. Australia is set to host a groundbreaking trial for a new peanut allergy treatment. This trial, beginning in September 2024 across major cities, targets antibodies responsible for peanut allergy reactions. The trial will explore whether a single dose of this medication can provide protection for several weeks or even months. 🌟 Exciting advancements in allergy treatment! 🌟 Recent studies have shown promising results for omalizumab in managing peanut allergy, with a higher proportion of patients experiencing improved tolerance to peanuts, cashews, milk, and eggs compared to a placebo group. While 17% of individuals administered omalizumab still require strict allergen avoidance, the drug demonstrates significant potential in enhancing tolerance levels. However, it's important to note that omalizumab does come with its own set of considerations. Common side effects include injection site reactions and fever, and precautions such as anaphylaxis, malignancy, and abnormal lab tests should be carefully monitored. The drug initiation is recommended in healthcare settings equipped to manage anaphylaxis. Despite these precautions, selected patients who tolerate initial treatments well may be eligible for self-administration under healthcare provider guidance.
