"Athlete-Licensed" is a new category in the $52B licensed sports merchandise market which leverages Athlete personal brands and IP to drive commerce. Here are 3 reasons why it has the potential to out grow "Team-Licensed" merchandise: 1. There are a disproportionate number of Athletes who have, in aggregate, over 20x the social following compared to teams. 2. It can grow Team revenue if teams tap into Athlete audience data. This is because merchandise is a top of the funnel driver for tickets, subscriptions, etc. Smart teams like the Chicago Sky are doing this. 3. Fans want merchandise which supports Athletes directly (in addition to team merchandise). To achieve this growth "Athlete-Licensed" platforms need to streamline distribution across sales channels like eCommerce, retail, wholesale, etc. like Fanatics does for teams.
