Final main article of my freshman year at The Review, and it's (you guessed it, maybe) a Broadway piece! This time, it's a recap of what shows stopped by in the 2023-24 season! Writing about Broadway is so much fun. Attended a panel on International Producing put on by The Broadway League. Got to learn hot tips on producing shows all over the world, and also what international audiences want when they come here! Some takeaways I wrote down: ✅ When marketing your show overseas, just because it’s the same show, doesn’t mean it’s the same strategy. ✅ Research is essential before you enter the market to learn what that audience knows about your brand. ✅ Lucky enough to have multiple productions around the world?  Make connections across those productions to create economies. ✅ Being a Tony Award Winning Musical isn’t enough to guarantee international success.  And vice versa!  (Dance of the Vampires is HUGE in Germany!) And a few tidbits about our international audience here in NY: 👉 The tourist audience is about 97% back from 2019 levels!  👉 NYC is the #1 destination for younger audiences overseas. 👉 That younger audience gets recommendations from LOCALS when they are deciding what to see (and probably young locals) 👉 The international traveler has money to spend, and they want an experience. #BroadwayLeague #Producing #BroadwayProducer #TonyAwardWinning #TheaterMakers

Have you ever been to a Broadway show? If so, you know what an incredible production it is. You also probably know that in order to put on a seamless, engaging, and truly remarkable show, it takes immense preparation both on AND off the stage. In fact, most preparation happens LONG before the first rehearsal even happens. From writing the script, planning the music, preparing the set for each scene, costumes…the list goes on and on and on. The same is true for ANY great event: we must intentionally plan (with as much detail as possible) for every single moment of the show…including pieces that will never even be seen by the audience! Every lighting cue. Every line. Every slide. Every transition. All. Of. It. Want a remarkable event? Every detail matters! What events are you planning for in 2024!?

Just launched a new website but skipped on the marketing? That's like opening a Broadway show and forgetting to put up the billboards in Times Square! The awards season for New York theatre broke into full swing this morning with the Drama League nominations. More will soon follow including the #TonyAward nominations, which is theatre's highest honor. And each year this time I find myself perplexed, disgruntled, curious, annoyed, pleasantly surprised, delighted and any number of reactions to the plays, musicals and individual artists singled out by the industry for exceptional achievement. One area that is consistently inconsistent and persistently unfair it seems to me is in the revival categories. There are shows that were never before performed on Broadway ("Appropriate" for example) that have been deemed a revival by the Tony Awards. Ostensibly because that show was performed off-Broadway without sweeping changes to the play and so therefor revival status is justified. Do I have that right, Tony folks? So why then was a play like "Fat Ham" (nominated for five Tony Awards last year) which transferred from off-Broadway's The Public Theater to a Broadway house with little change and the same cast (I saw both productions) placed in the category of Best New Play? In all this is there jockeying for placement to up a production's chances of winning? Nah, that couldn't possibly happen in show business! But this does beg the question if it isn't time for more clarity, transparency and fairness in the categories in which shows and even certain performances (lead vs. featured) are determined. #Broadway #EntertainmentReporter #TheatreReporter #ArtsJournalist #OpenToWork #Writer #Producer #TVJournalist
