New orders for alternative fueled vessels are on the rise! 📈 According to DNV’s Alternative Fuels Insights (AFI), a total of 33 new orders were added to the database in May. #Methanol continues to lead the charge – 23 new orders for methanol fueled vessels were registered in May, with ten of these coming from the container segment 💪 The market is clearly shifting towards methanol: 70 methanol fueled vessels have been ordered so far in 2024, compared to 46 #LNG fueled vessels (eight in May). There is also some more good news for #ammonia: two new orders for ammonia fueled vessels were placed in May, bringing this year’s total to 11.

JP Morgan orders two methanol powered tankers backed by TotalEnergies The two methanol powered product tankers each boast a capacity of 50,000 dwt and will cost $50 million each. The order shows the increasing significance of methanol as component in the ongoing drive for greener shipping practices and growing methanol demand as a marine fuel. The dual-fuel technology allows the vessels to operate on both methanol and conventional fuels, offering operational flexibility while contributing to a tangible reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. A similar contract was signed recently by Singapore-based tanker owner and operator Hafnia with GSI. Hafnia has ordered the construction of four 49,800 dwt dual-fuel methanol chemical MR tankers. All four vessels are fixed via time charter to MI member TotalEnergies shipping entity CSSA for a multi-year period. Hafnia Orders Dual-Fuel Methanol Chemical IMOII MR Newbuilds Together with Joint-Venture partner “Socatra of France”, Hafnia has concluded an order for four 49,800 deadweight dual-fuel Methanol Chemical IMOII Medium-Range (MR) Newbuilds, constructed out of Guangzhou Shipyard International (GSI), in China. In line with Hafnia’s sustainability values and ambitions in transitioning towards a greener future and maritime sector, this is Hafnia’s first investment and step into the dual-fuel methanol landscape. In 2023, Hafnia took delivery of two of its four Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) dual-fuel LR2 Product Tankers – the Hafnia Languedoc and Hafnia Loire, also built out of GSI, with the two remaining vessels to be delivered up to 2024. It is manufactured as a chemical by combining nitrogen from the air with hydrogen. As a hydrogen carrier (17.6 % of the weight of ammonia is hydrogen), ammonia can be transported to demand centers for power generation and as a marine fuel in support of the energy transition.
