MAN Energy Solutions have ordered at Hitachi Zosen Corporation a methanol fuel S90 test engine to become a parent engine and service Methanol retrofit on the S90 2 stroke engines which today are installed in more than 300 large container vessels. Every vessel in this segment operating on heavy fuel oil emit on yearly basis between 50.000 and 90.000 tons of #co2 . What an incredible #CERAWeek 2024! The energy industry's pinnacle event concluded with resounding success. With the theme "Energy Transition: Opportunities and Challenges," thought leaders delved into reshaping the sector to meet evolving demands. During the “How to make net zero happen?” panel, hosted by Leanne Todd at S&P Global Insight delved into new energies strategies and the balance. Particularly how we’ve got to be responsible in terms of time and resources, and we've got to deliver on those commitments. And I think we're all cautious about serial number one and a lot less nervous about serial number two and three. We will come down that cost curve, but we can't approach the first ones as we do conventional technologies available today. I was also joined by fellow Bechtel Corporation colleagues ⬇️ - Craig Albert highlighted Bechtel's pivotal role in driving EPC industry growth. - Ailie MacAdam emphasized the power of collaborative partnerships in overcoming future - hurdles. - Jamie McMillan unveiled LEEDS, a groundbreaking water conservation technology. - Anne Esbeck highlighted Bechtel’s dynamic exploration to help lower our carbon footprint through material transition. - Heloisa Schmidt emphasized our commitment to reducing emissions across our entire value chain. - Natalie Wane underscored what we are doing in the challenging landscape to attract, retain and develop the craft professional talent.  And that’s a wrap for #CERAWeek 2024.w

As part of the Future From Here TV Asahi project, a report will be presented on SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) initiatives. One of the key topics for today is clean energy for all. Currently, the world is paying attention to technology that produces electricity by generating hydrogen from aluminum scraps. Hydrogen is rapidly produced from aluminum in a joint venture in Takao-ka, Toyama Prefecture, where companies are developing a system that recycles discarded aluminum to produce hydrogen and clean electricity. The future envisioned by Mizuki is reminiscent of the DeLorean time machine from the movie "Back to the Future." It works by transforming waste into fuel. Nobuaki Mizuki, president of Al Hitech, stated, "I believe it's possible to create fuel from waste." Paper and plastic fibers are removed from waste containing aluminum, and only clean aluminum is extracted. This aluminum is then mixed with a liquid that triggers a chemical reaction, resulting in the production of hydrogen. This hydrogen is sent to fuel cells to generate electricity. The special reaction solution we've developed has a secret. Normally, the sodium hydroxide solution used to produce hydrogen loses its functionality after a single use. However, our special reaction solution can be used approximately 100 times and can be purified and reused even after that. With this special reaction solution and aluminum, you can generate hydrogen and produce electricity as needed without emitting carbon dioxide. Since it's a compact system, it can be installed in factories without the expense of storing hydrogen or carbon dioxide emissions during transportation. I traveled with Prime Minister Kishida on a visit to the Middle East last year, and I was subsequently invited to attend COP28. Governments around the world, including Japan, are paying attention to new hydrogen technologies that could change the future of the world. Nobuaki Mizuki, president of Al Hitec, said, "I am confident that we can create a new carbon-free energy society using everyone's waste, which can continuously produce energy 24 hours a day, regardless of location or weather conditions." In addition to the sliding wheel, we are also developing small devices that can move without the need for energy sources. As long as you have aluminum, you can generate hydrogen and produce electricity anytime, anywhere. Local governments across the country are interested in ideas to help maintain electricity security during major disasters.

Last week I was at the Enlit Europe in Paris, one of the most important energy trade fairs. I learnt a lot and met many interesting people. And a few quotes from conversations are still on my mind. But first to briefly immerse you in the general atmosphere. Crowded, wide halls, wherever you look technology on display, or big themes in neon signs: Decarbonisation, flexibility, ecological sustainability as well as the connection to the consumer and society. The energy transition is having a profound impact. And everyone here seems to agree that the pace, scale and success of the transition will largely depend on the choices people make - in their homes, communities, and daily lives. Yet it seems to me that their everyday desires and needs are not part of the fair. It seems that an important human element is missing. "Energy is actually a simple, everyday end product, but with a highly complex technical process of generation, supply and distribution." This was an explanation in one of my conversations. It was one of the few that wasn't peppered with acronyms: PV, TES, BESS, V2G, P2H, most people can't even imagine what kWh means. Can this gap between energy as a highly complex technical commodity and energy as a simple and everyday common good be bridged more quickly? (Tommaso Carratta, Lars Molske, Helen Heinz) Shared local energy and decentralised energy communities are part of the answer, many here agree. Sometimes they even have the potential to change the culturally ingrained way we deal with and relate to energy. "The wind turbine that I can see from my terrace makes me proud. I am a co-owner." 'Not in my backyard' becomes 'I am a proud shareholder', e-cars can be made available to the social community as an energy storage device, and big data, AI, and IoT platforms already provide a wealth of information. The problem is that few people in local urban communities know what to do with them. How can all the possibilities become part of everyday practices or a collective and contextually anchored customer experience? (Rebecca Dibb-Simkin, Scott W. Neuman, Charlie van Dijl, Chris Vrettos, Sebastiaan Coppenholle, BEYOND Project - H2020) This brings us to topics that took up less space, namely social inclusion, generational and gender issues. The gender gap in the energy sector is common knowledge, and perhaps the following quote reflects this. It also hints at the importance of practical everyday knowledge, cultural specificities and context: “I recently suggested to my wife that we do the washing at night. ‘Great idea,’ she replied, ‘then the washing will be in the machine for hours and we can do it again in the morning.’" Changing consumers' everyday experiences should be at the centre of the energy transition - as should their local communities.
