Thank you for doing this, Herzog Foundation! There are profound theological and pedagogical reasons to at least be asking these questions. Sure, it blows up much of the way we think about traditional school. But in general, doesn't the assumptions that come from starting with the gospel as our first premise also blow up a lot of assumptions! There's enough data out there about the pedagogical effects on students and their capacities; it provides more time for teachers to prep and to stay sharp throughout the week; it creates more space for recognizing the importance of the family; (if Monday is the day "off,") it encourages greater participation in and enjoyment of our corporate worship. I could go on and on. It's part of the reason why it's one of the first podcast episodes I put together for RenewEd. 24 minute listen here: https://lnkd.in/gaRDXAKk

The business of sport...
In less than two years, Lindenwood University went from being bullish on Division I, to cutting nine varsity sports. What happened? https://lnkd.in/gknkZhUH

Don't be surprised if you see Kennesaw State University or University of Indianapolis follow the lead of Lindenwood to cut athletics opportunities in the coming years. The finances don't add up and there will be a tidal wave of expenses not realized by the leaders at these institutions. Analysis on KSU, UIndy: https://lnkd.in/gZEQrgKW Or for that matter, University of Southern Indiana. Analysis on USI: https://lnkd.in/g_KPQGZG University of Delaware are you paying attention? Of course they aren't. As of 2019, Delaware operated on 87% subsidy from students and the institution. Athletics is generating only 13% of its own revenue to pay its bills, and wants to move to CUSA and DI-FBS? Unwise financial decision that will lead to cuts in the near future. It costs MORE to move up a division than the new money raised. Always.

"How do you take a great place, and make it better?" That was the question President C. Andrew McGadney asked himself when he first came to Knox College. Now, entering his fourth year as president, he discusses the big upcoming academic year for Knox—including the record number of new students, and the millions of dollars of work being done. Go Blue! Joel. I remember this like it was yesterday. Beautiful sunny Ann Arbor spring day and such joy. It’s great to be a Michigan Wolverine! The Walter Cronkite speech was fairly realistic given the status of the US economy and the world. He told us to stay at Michigan. Mr. Cronkite talked about the “megaproblems that we face:” 1. The population explosion, 2. Pollution, 3. Depletion of natural resources (including food and energy), and 4. Atomic proliferation. “It is hardly necessary to expand on these items for a group of Michigan graduates -- * you know that the world population will double by the time you are fifty and will almost double again by the time you sit here to watch your grandchildren graduate; and almost 90 percent of that growth will be in the already poor, starving, underdeveloped lands. * You know that our blind devotion to immediate profit instead of future security continues to poison the water we drink and the air we breathe and threatens the entire food chain at its source. * You know that, because of mismanagement, we are running out of fuel and arable land and dozens of vitalminerals and metals. * You know that experts count a score of nations on the threshold of nuclear energy, and its by-products of bomb-grade material. * Hanging heavily over us is the thought of atomic bombs in the hands of the Khadaffis and Khomeinis of our world. These are problems that will not wait much longer for solution. Among the more pessimistic of our scientists there is the gloomy assessment that we already may have passed the point of no return on one or all of them. Well, I should think that is a proposition that at least you would want to test.” Still even more relevant today! "It's up to you," said Walter Cronkite, “to help and to lead the inevitable social, political, and economic revolution which our magnificent technological revolution forces upon us. "But don't despair, you, of all people, are up to it." https://lnkd.in/g3fYs_t9

Saturday, April 27: I graduated from the University of Michigan 40 years ago today. I feel old. I remember it was a bright day. I walked into Michigan Stadium with my friend (to this day) William Roney, CPA. We listened to Walter Cronkite, still somewhat newly retired from CBS, deliver the commencement address. I don't remember anything he said. A lot has happened since then, but I am always glad I got my start at the University of Michigan. (April 27 also marks 14 years of being prostate cancer-free. Coming up on three and a half years of being thyroid cancer-free.)

School Counselor at Berks Career & Technology Center | Pennsylvania School Counselors Association Board Secretary | Berks Area School Counselors Association Board VP | PACAC At-large Delegate to the Executive Committee
In the spirit of our school's commitment to empowering students for success, I'd like to commend our Executive Director, Dr. Stauffer, for his article highlighting the importance of partnerships in preparing our high school students for the future. The article captures the collaborative efforts between various educational partners, including local businesses, educators, counselors, administrators, and industry representatives, to ensure that no student is left behind in their pursuit of valuable skills and opportunities. Dr. Stauffer emphasizes the important role of Career and Technology Centers in providing high-quality education that equips students with practical, hands-on learning experiences. By partnering with local businesses and industry, our centers bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world application, preparing students for success in college, postsecondary training, the military, or the workforce. I particularly appreciate the emphasis on the alignment of curriculum with industry standards, the provision of industry-standard tools and equipment, and the opportunity for students to earn nationally recognized certifications. These initiatives not only enhance students' understanding of their chosen fields but also cultivate a skilled workforce that contributes to the prosperity of Berks County. The article highlights the importance of early engagement and informed decision-making for students, facilitated through career presentations, campus tours, and open house events. By fostering positive relationships and collaboration with local partners, our school ensures that students are well-prepared to meet the demands of tomorrow's workforce. Dr. Stauffer's article supports the commitment of our school and community to empowering the next generation of skilled workers and leaders. I encourage anyone interested in learning more about these opportunities to reach out to the Berks Career and Technology Center or the Reading/Muhlenberg Career and Technology Center. Together, we are shaping a bright future for our students and our community.
"When it comes to educating the next generation to lead Berks County well into the future, it is crucial to recognize the many partnerships that go into preparing today’s high school students to become the leaders of tomorrow." In this week’s Superintendents’ Forum, Dr. Michael Stauffer, Berks Career & Technology Center (BCTC) Executive Director, discusses the partnerships that boost education in the community.
