LinkedIn network... I'm having a vulnerable moment 😬 July was the first time in 10 months I didn't hit my monthly target 🎯 It's been a slow month, lot's of prospects on holiday and a couple deals I was banking on slipped. Even though summer comes round every year, I still find it extra challenging when the pace slows down 😓 But it's super important to consistently remind yourself that sales has ups ⬆️ and downs ⬇️, and sometimes things don't work out the way you expect. I'm really working on separating my sense of achievement from monthly number, but it's tough - especially when you put a lot of time and effort into your role (I know we all do!!) But, I just had a chat with one of my colleagues, and he made a good joke about me not being myself when I'm not closing (thanks Callum McManus!) It reminded me of that famous Snickers ad, but was also a stark reminder that as reps, we are a lot more than our number. So for anyone else that's feeling the dip in pace, this post is for you. What the hat says. Not always easy but hey easy would be boring, right? Today I chatted with a brand that has been on my wish list since starting Foster. 🚀To make it even more mind blowing they approached us, referring to how they’d thought of us as, “you’re doing field sales & activation differently to how it’s always been done.” ❤️ Thankfully a dodgy mobile signal gifted me time to compose my utter excitement, joy and huge emotion on hearing this, and respond in a more controlled manner than Gwynnie Paltrow’s Oscar acceptance speech. F**k. Excuse the lack of eloquence. I can’t explain the feeling of planning and dreaming and executing and believing, deep in your bones, that there is a different, more engaging and exciting way of doing things… …to then having someone you really admire telling you they get it and believe it too. Colleagues I Value #7: Deina King Entertainment has Oprah. Tennis has Serena. LinkedIn Sales has Deina. If you ask me who’s the best PM or engineer in LinkedIn’s history, a bunch of incredible candidates spring to mind, but there’s no obvious front-runner. But if you ask me who’s the best salesperson, Deina's name immediately surfaces first (followed quickly by Brian Tietje, Dave Teplinsky, Rob Humphrey, and several other amazing folks). Deina’s “What” is plenty impressive: LinkedIn’s first $1M recruiting customer. First $2M. First $5M. Probably first $10M and $20M. You get the idea: she trail-blazed through every major customer milestone, inspiring others to follow and stand on her shoulders. I remember LinkedIn celebrating Deina reaching $100M in cumulative customer bookings by 2014 or so and then adopting “a Deina” into the LinkedIn parlance; as in, “With strong execution, we can grow the business this year by at least 4 Deinas!” Deina's “How” is even more impressive than her "What": She's always set the standard for excellence. I first worked with Deina on the Microsoft renewal in early 2010 - a $1.5M deal that now feels quaint but then was the second-largest deal in LinkedIn history (#1 was hers too). She saw the whole chess board and expertly maneuvered Klayton Kopecky, Daniel Shapero, me, numerous others at LinkedIn, and the Microsoft team to pull together the best deal for everybody. And it’s because she locates that Goldilocks “just right” point on critical dimensions where others either fall short or step across the line. For example: - She’s demanding to work with, but epitomizes the concept that selling is a "we" vs "me" activity - She pushes customers to think (and spend) bigger, but is never pushy - She shares strong opinions about what to build with her product partners, but always respects their perspective and expertise And, continuing on the theme of Goldilocks’ “just right,” like Oprah and Serena, Deina has reinvented herself at the right time more than once: First, she moved into sales leadership back in 2015 while at the absolute top of her individual contributor game: it was like Michael Jordan turning to baseball in 1993; but with Deina, it worked, and it stuck. She's since been able to teach thousands her incredible blend of skills. And second, she's become an executive coach over the past five years or so, building her client base while continuing to take on larger leadership roles at LinkedIn. If you or someone on your team is looking to be coached by somebody who epitomizes excellence, give Deina a call. Finally, while most of our closest working partnership was in our early LinkedIn years, Deina’s been there for me in a meaningful way on several recent occasions, which I'm deeply thankful for (especially apt this week). Be yourself. No matter how odd you think it might be. Being yourself is the only thing that you have and the only thing that will make you contented. Look at these two guys (like a scene from Only Fools & Horses) that I spotted whilst popping to Morrisons (a local supermarket) with my son. There’s a lot here to unpick…but these guys don’t care what other’s do or say. Obviously. We can all learn a lesson from their behaviour though - be yourself and love being it. I was chatting to a friend about this just yesterday. They have their own “things” that they do on social which help establish their personal brand. Some of what they do is professional…some of it is just fun but they are a fun kind of person and they are loving being themselves on these global platforms. So what quirks do you have that might make you interesting to people? What passions outside of work do you have that might impress me (or I might also share)?
