Spot on insight here and a pet peeve of mine. We all know that it’s driven by creative briefs/clients AND agencies! It’s why you find a lot of sameness in ads, be it use/sense of humor, tropes, subjects vs objects - as there is factually a lack of diversity on: 👉🏾who gets to brief, commission, 👉🏾 who gets to write, 👉🏾 who gets to produce, direct and edit the visuals AND audio …that makes it onto TV! ‘How can advertising respond to the DEI opportunity’ was such an engaging panel discussion that was conducted on 7th December at Mumbai as part of the D&I Edge Summit hosted by The Advertising Standards Council of India and Unstereotype Alliance. Do catch this wonderful article by Noel D'souza (he/him) in Campaign India! The panel was expertly moderated by Prasad Sangameshwaran, Editor, Brand Equity.com with panelists, Ashiish V Patil, CEO & Co-Founder, Isspeshai Stratcon LLP, Sumit Agarwal, DEI Advisor to Fortune 500 Companies, Anjali Madan, Head of Media, Mondelez and Anirban Mozumdar, CSO, Havas Creative India. ✅ They discussed how the narratives within the space of advertising could be reshaped as they looked at ways of how brands could be non-tokenistic and champion authentic representation. ✅ Sometimes more than representation or under representation, wrong representation or mis representation can be more dangerous. Especially when it gives legitimacy to the already existing stereotypes. ✅ They opined that it was critical to look at the product end-to-end – product design, development, marketing, communication - from a diverse, inclusive, representation and accessibility lens. ✅ The panel also deliberated on the challenges of translating brand intentions into meaningful actions. ✅ The dire need for authenticity and genuine and sustained efforts, backed by a deep understanding of consumers rooted in a brand's ethos was highlighted. ✅ There were rich examples of the film industry where misrepresentation of marginalized communities is rampant due to inaunthentic casting.    ✅ They reflected on how Inclusivity is hardly ever a table stake at the nascent or brief stage of communication planning and development. ✅ The panel also looked at how the world is moving towards conscious consumption from conspicuous consumption and how important it is to tell authentic stories where inclusion is unobtrusive in the story without coming across as force fitted. ✅ They also looked at the dangers of insincere intentions at D&I being called out by the discerning consumers and other stakeholders if the brand’s voice sounded tokenistic or came across as a ‘pity party’ in the guise of Inclusion. ✅ The importance of normalization of conversations around Inclusion to change the debate was also highlighted. ✅ They deliberated on the importance of accurate consumer data to understand the various hues of consumers to serve them better. ✅ Importance of aligning actions with the brand message, being relevant as against being caught up in tokenism was addressed. ✅ Despite the positive intentions, there sometimes is the fear of unintended consequences and how there should be a delicate balance between progressive advertising and potential societal pushback. SHOUTS INTO SIGNATURES I love this new ad campaign that uses innovative techology to transform anger into action. The idea behind “Shout for Equality” is purposefully simple: Turn people’s shouts into signatures.  As many as 80% of Americans believe that women have equal protection under the U.S. Constitution. When they hear the fact that the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) still isn’t recognized as part of the Constitution, it's no surprise that they would want to shout. "We thought, ‘What if we get everyone to shout for equality and use that as a signature?’” explained Lisa Bright, chief creative officer of the ad agency, Ogilvy California. Olgilvy created the campaign for former Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-N.Y.) and the ERA Coalition to galvanize the discontent of women and finally enshrine the ERA into the Constitution. The campaign uniquely creates a new, easier way to sign a petition using existing SMS technology. It works like this: A person texts “ERA” to a number or scans the QR code. A chatbot prompts them to input their name and ZIP code and shout via an audio message. The application then creates a badge with their signature that will be added to the petition and can also be shared on social media, which is central to the strategy. Ogilvy and the coalition partners are working with influencers and adapting the tool for channels including TikTok, Instagram, and LinkedIn.   The “shout” is important, because the ERA Coalition and Ogilvy wanted to “connect to an emotion and deliver to women why they need to care about this,” Bright added. “Most people think we are protected and safe,” Bright said. “When you realize that we’re not actually legally protected, it’s scary and unnerving.” The point of the petition is to get members of Congress to understand that the ERA isn't a niche issue. It is a needed protection and deserved human right that will impact people's lives on a daily basis. Still no constitutional equality for women in 2024? That's something to shout about, for sure!
