Updated AUKUS pact has ‘get-out clause’ for US and UK. An updated AUKUS agreement and political ‘understanding’ between the countries includes an escape clause if the US or UK decides the pact weakens their own nuclear submarine programs. Treaty documents tabled in parliament on Monday will allow the US and Britain to pull out of the deal with just one year’s notice if they decide it threatens their own nuclear submarine programs. Defence Minister Richard Marles said the new 51-year agreement was a major AUKUS milestone, and came on top of “significant progress”, including the passage of enabling legislation in the US. The documents, including a revamped #AUKUS agreement and a new political “understanding”, commit the nation’s AUKUS partners to make “best efforts” to supply nuclear materials and equipment to Australia over the next 50 years. Australia should wake up and start teaching its children, politicians and businesses about nuclear technology. AUKUS is an opportunity to start on that. Currently it just sits there looking frit (a word Mrs Thatcher used for those disabled by fear).
AUKUS Forum, this is informative. From the US side, such "agreements" should be, used to be, "treaties" which required approval of Congress. Deviation has consequences. History has shown that treaties can be presented, debated and approved at warp speed. I believe we should engage such far-reaching, half-century obligations as intended by our Constitution.
"Revamped" AUKUS agreement. This bait and switch is the oldest trick in the book and once again our pathetic "leadership" willingly bends over and takes it. Australia should walk from the whole deal and invest the money on locally developed UUV's, a new long range diesel electric submarine and our own missile systems. Australian taxpayers don't need (or want) to be dragged into the next US conflict thank you very much. It's time the Australian government backed our own industrial capability.
For the next 50 years, Australian taxpayers will be supporting part of the American military industry. Why not a 12-year agreement (3 presidential terms), renewable every 12 years? Does it takes more than 10 years to build a submarine? Australia and its leaders need to develop strategic thinking so as not to be held hostage by foreign policies.
Unfortunate Australia , remains the right to pay upfront , with no idea whether they will ever get anything for their dollars …
Thank you for your money Australia, byeeeeee
I would like to have the option to drop the US and continue with the AU bit.
