Quickstep announces new drone orders, to expand drone manufacturing Advanced composites manufacturer Quickstep has secured new orders and collaborations with drone customers, spurring a major expansion of its Drone Aerostructures and Payloads business. The company said it had received a follow-on order for 20 Volanti aircraft from drone company Carbonix following its delivery of an order for 40 Volanti’s worth $1.35 million in June. The new order for the 3.6m VTOL Power Lift drone which carries out rapid aerial survey of infrastructure such as electrical transmission lines is valued at approximately $430,000. Shadowy XRQ-73 Hybrid-Electric Stealthy Flying Wing Drone Emerges A stealthy-looking flying wing drone with a hybrid-electric propulsion system the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is developing now has a designation: XRQ-73. DARPA hopes to flight test this uncrewed aircraft later this year and eventually demonstrate it can be operationalized relatively quickly to meet an unspecified “urgent operational need.” The new designation reflects the design’s leveraging of previous work on the secretive ultra-quiet, high-efficiency XRQ-72A drone, which The War Zone was first to report on in detail. DARPA announced the assignment of the XRQ-73 designation to the drone being developed under what is currently called the Series Hybrid Electric Propulsion AiRcraft Demonstration (SHEPARD) program in a press release earlier today. A new rendering of the design, or what may very well be an actual picture overlaid on top of a computer-generated background, seen at the top of this story, accompanied that release. DARPA has been running SHEPARD in cooperation with the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) and the Office of Naval Research (ONR) since 2021. Northrop Grumman is the prime contractor for SHEPARD and its subsidiary Scaled Composites is described as a “major supplier.” Cornerstone Research Group, Brayton Energy, PC Krause and Associates, and EaglePicher Technologies are also involved in the project. Scaled Composites developed the XRQ-72 and is well known for producing advanced and novel crewed and uncrewed aircraft designs. A rendering of the XRQ-72A design. USAF via FOIA From what can be seen in the current rendering, the XRQ-73 has a tailless flying wing planform. DARPA The SHEPARD drone has a general flying wing planform that is similar in some respects to a number of known existing designs, like Lockheed Martin Skunk Work’s RQ-170 Sentinel, P-175 Polecat, and X-44A, as well as Scaled Composites XRQ-72A. A top-secret Northrop Grumman design commonly referred to as the RQ-180 is also speculated to have a general shape that is similar in broad strokes, but be much larger than the XRQ-73 design.

"Forward scatter analysis involves detecting changes in the radio waves between the on-board receiver and multiple Low & Medium Earth Orbit satellites. On-board ...technology monitors incoming radio waves through AI algorithms to identify and track drone incursions ....providing increased range compared to traditional channel scanning methodologies." Packet Sniffing involves continuous scanning of channels to detect and decrypt broadcast packets made by drones. Aero-Ark can detect and decrypt 99.8% of commercially available drone signals...... Information contained in packets allows the system to identify and track drones within a 3-5 mile radius. The system also features an omni-directional antenna which provides a 360 degree scanning methodology....
