My job is considered a multi-craft technician. What does multi-craft really, mean, not everyone is a expert in every field or feel qualified to do some task/ jobs expected. There will always be a stronger field of expertise and its is almost always the one you feel most comfortable in or find the challenge in doing and that feeling of accomplishment. My current employer is very strong on their commitment to Multi-craft technicians, this can be alot to ask a new mechanic. Just in my years at my Employer,yes I used years I am still learning. We work with High voltage electricity, robotics, pneumatics, steam, energetic equipment, production equipment, this is just a small portion of what one is expected to work on or with. We must be able to use Manuals, schematics, drawings, knowledge, past experience etc.... to repair and even understand what one is working on or with. I am mechanic so my strongest skill or aspect is in that mechanical maintenance. To help Understand and to do the other aspects of my jobs I have taken secondary classes, worked with journeyman, worked with factory technicians and good Ole on the job trainin and what I find helps the most working with the maintenance workers at the job site. The last one is where skills and past experience can be shared, this can be tricky with some, you also know what is meant by this. Not just knowing your skills it is also knowing your limits, it is better to ask for help than what the alternative can be. I have asked that question and got that look or that answer and you know what I mean. So what makes me a multi-craft is not my job or my title but my ability and willingness to take on the challenge, seek out the training and help from individuals that are willing to help gain understanding of the other fields and aspects of the work. Hopefully at your employer, your management sees the need for training the need to work different individuals or work groups together for crosstraining and also to need or help to build confidence and moral. Experience should not just be learned it needs to be shared and used to teach.
