It's been a while since I've done this, but my response to Tractor Supply Company's walking back on DEI initiatives became lengthy and was better suited as an article - so here you go... How does Tractor Supply plan to ensure a respectful environment for all customers, including LGBTQ+ people, as they eliminate their DEI programs? What steps will Tractor Supply take to ensure marginalized groups within our rural communities, who are also their customers and neighbors, are not discriminated against? Today, an article in USA TODAY by Jessica Guynn explains that as bad actors from the fringe right are taking to social media in bad faith efforts to spread fear and politicize diversity and inclusion initiatives, employees and customers are expressing frustration and concern over shortsighted decisions some companies have made. Customers and employees are speaking out. Here's the thing: Business leaders and shareholders understand that strong commitment to inclusion is a business driver, which is why HRC has seen a record number of companies embracing LGTBQ+ inclusion as part of our Corporate Equality Index. With close to 30% of Gen Z adults identifying as LGBTQ+ and the community holding $1.4 trillion in spending power, decisions to abandon values of diversity and inclusion are detrimental to any company’s bottom line and the American economy writ-large. According to new data from Edelman, 60 percent of people say an inclusive work culture with a well-supported diversity program is critical to attracting and retaining them as an employee – up nine points from 2022. According to ACCP, senior business leaders from 125 leading companies say their commitment to DEI is steadfast at 96%: 83% of respondents noting this commitment has remained consistent, and 13% reporting an increase compared to last year.

RAINBOW WASHING: CORPORATE ACTIVISM SUPPORT #PRIDE365 In the era of social media and heightened political awareness, companies are increasingly expected to take a stand on societal issues. This trend has led to a rise in corporate activism, where businesses publicly support various causes, including LGBTQ+ rights. However, this practice has also given rise to a phenomenon known as "Rainbow Washing." Rainbow Washing refers to the practice of corporations using rainbow symbolism or LGBTQ+ themes, particularly during Pride Month, without necessarily implementing policies that support the LGBTQ+ community.
