Can Commentary be Disability Inclusive? During the recently concluded #T20WorldCup, there were many instances where terms like "langda" and "andha" were used casually during commentary. Such terms are not only outdated but also disrespectful and hurtful to individuals with disabilities. Sports have the power to influence so many and it's crucial that our language reflects inclusivity. We need to find alternative words to put our points across. As Disability Pride Month starts, we need to have commentary that celebrates athleticism without resorting to derogatory language. Why do you enjoy motorsports so much? Is it the thrill of an adrenaline rush? The fast cars being pushed to their limits, the crowds of people, the smell of burning rubber in the air? Are you completely able bodied? Have you ever stopped to wonder what it’s like for people living with a disability? Have you ever stopped to consider the fact that every day tasks that you take for granted might actually be difficult for people with disabilities? Societies expectations for people with disabilities have created such a negative perception of what it’s like for them to function from day to day. When words like ‘useless’ and ‘pathetic’ are thrown around, they can make an individual feel as though they’re a burden to society. Moreover, these defeatist attitudes can have immeasurable consequences for people living with disability and serve to contribute to severe social isolation. Nobody deserves to be defined by their disability. Nobody deserves to have to live with the stigma attached to this discrimination. Nobody should have to feel ashamed of who they are and what their body represents. We depend on event organisers to make reasonable adjustments so that we too can enjoy Motorsport events. With demand at an all time high, accessibility needs should be at the top of your list when it comes to circuit considerations. It’s time to listen to people with a lived experience. We have voices, we deserve to be heard. Well Channel 4 has done it again - resetting the bar in #authenticrepresentation and digging into the harmful tropes that keep parasport (and disability in general) from achieving parity with the Olympics. I cannot speak highly enough of the team at Channel 4 and their efforts to mainstream disability in all of their programming. This is an example to follow for any company that is truly invested in disability inclusion - there is no summit of this mountain, no end of the road. No 100% scores and no perfection. Disability inclusion in business is, like any other go-to-market strategy, an exercise in humility and constant progress. Brands such as Channel 4 who are able to recognise the improvements they can make and act upon them - and own that imperfection - should be celebrated. Is your club or community organisation welcoming and inclusive? Modern facilities are adapting to be more inclusive, recognising the diverse needs of all participants. According to Paralympics Australia, almost 20% of people in Australia live with a disability, yet only one in four of these people participate in sport. 75% of Australians with disabilities want to engage in sport but feel limited by the opportunities available. Furthermore, while 65-70% of the general population participate in sport at least once a year, only 12.5% of those with severe or profound impairments do so. These statistics highlight the need for inclusive facilities and the significant opportunities to increase participation among people with disabilities. Fantastic reporting Sarah Richards the kind of reporting that only comes from having a disabled person in roles like journalist. From a lived experience perspective and because it helps build trust with the community that you have skin in the game. You might not realise but your next article is already written. I worry that 'universal access' just won't cut it. Its a term with too much wiggle room. Universal access is what you do to go above compliance. We haven't got there yet. Adherence to disability standards for public transport, achieving the government's own targets for employment, these haven't been met. Compliance is the benchmark that's been established as the base. Dont build a house on poor foundations. Any measures of legacy need to be explored with the understanding of why haven't we gotten to bare minimum so far? #brisbane2032 #paralympics #disability
