⚡ Flashback Friday. The 33rd Summer #Olympics begin in Paris today and everyone here at EDRMedeso is looking forward to cheering on their favourite athletes. But did you know one of our team played an instrumental, if slightly controversial, part in the design of the Speedo International Ltd Fastskin and subsequent LZR Racer swimsuits? These ultra-lightweight, water-repellent suits were worn by athletes in the Beijing Olympics - with 94% of all swimming races won by those wearing the suit, including legendary Olympian Michael Phelps, who described the feel of the LZR Racer as like a spacesuit! Stephen Silvester worked alongside Speedo Aqualab scientists and engineers simulating thousands of scenarios to optimize the suits, with designs that featured millimetre differences between them. Using Ansys Fluent, CFD offered insight into drag, and at the time used high performance computing equivalent to that only seen in the F1 world. The advantage offered by the suit was significant enough to cause FINA, the international governing body of swimming, to take a closer look. In March 2009, FINA issued an edict banning full-body suits that it considered to be performance-enhancing in world championships. Later, in July 2009, it reversed its policy, but stipulated that swimwear must be made of “textile.” (Stephen still has an actual suit in his possession, although he admits he's never tried it on!) Today, simulation continues to play an exciting role in pushing athletes to be the first over the line and is increasingly being adopted to gain deeper insight into equipment performance and design. #simulation #sportstechnology #gold #worldrecord #ansys

As we sit here basking in the spectacle that was #Olympics2024 waiting for #Paralympics2024 to begin, what better than a story of how the Concept2 rowing machines came to be. 🚣♀️ Two brothers, one sport, one Olympian and a desire to improve the all wood rowing oars used in the 1970s was the start. What started with an introduction of carbon fibre to oars and a newly designed blade eventually culminated in an upturned bicycle-like contraption which became the prototype to what we know as the Concept2 rowing machines many of us have used at our sports clubs or hotel gyms. 🚲 Seemingly very little has changed since then. The digital monitor looks like something from a previous era compared to the flash multi-media outputs of other equipment, but that keeps the costs down, which has been an important factor from the very start for the Dick and Peter Dreissigacker. 📟 It hasn't always been a smooth ride. The SPIN phenomena almost derailed things before the first machines were sold. Today marks the start of the first rowing race courses in the Olympic Games of Paris 2024! The outcomes of most sports which are played in the Olympics depend exclusively on the skills and the performance of the athletes. However, for certain sports which are held outdoor, such as rowing and kayaking, the results do not depend only on the athletes’ ability but also on the natural conditions of the site. The effects of the wind and the water stream on the outcome of a race are obvious. Thus, the International Rowing Federation (FISA) imposes rules to authorize or cancel a race depending on weather conditions to ensure the fairness of the competition. However, a less evident parameter that is generally neglected is: the depth of the water. Back in 2019, during my master’s in fluid mechanics, I worked in the “Sciences 2024” project, which was held by the ministry of sports of France to improve the performance of the athletes in the Olympics of 2024. Under the supervision of Graham Benham, I studied the Impact of the depth on the wave drag experienced by rowing, canoe, and kayak boats. We found out, both theoretically and experimentally, that regions of shallow water may either reduce or enhance the wave drag of the boat depending on factors such as boat length, velocity, and water depth. This means that if rowers know the bathymetry of the race site (i.e., the underwater depth and topography), they can build specific strategies for each competition. By understanding the varying depths, they can optimize their performance by adjusting their power exertion at the most opportune moments, significantly influencing the race outcome. Based on the piezoelectric effect of polar ZnO NWs, the fabricated biosensor can work in both air and water without any external power supply. In addition, the biosensor can be easily attached to the surface of the skin to precisely monitor the motion state such as joint moving angle and frequency during swimming. The constant output piezoelectric signal in different relative humidity levels enables actual application in different sports, including swimming. Therefore, the biosensor can be utilized to monitor swimming strokes by attaching it on the surface of the skin. Finally, a wireless transmitting application is demonstrated by implanting the biosensor in vivo to detect angiogenesis. This portable and flexible self-powered biosensor system exhibits broad application prospects in sport monitoring, human–computer interaction and wireless sport big data.

Hello to all aerodynamics enthusiasts! Here we are with another exciting experiment in our smoke wind tunnel! In this second video of our series, we are exploring how different conditions can affect the drag coefficient of moving cyclists. This time, we've introduced a new variable: Diego Lajo Parra and his drink! Observe how liquid intake during cycling can influence aerodynamics. As you'll see in the video, Diego experiences a significant increase in his drag coefficient compared to Paúl Cruz Llorente who is under similar conditions but isn't drinking. This result demonstrates the importance of considering various external factors that can influence the aerodynamic performance of a cyclist. If you’re a swimming fan like me, you might remember the 2008 Beijing Olympics for the number of records which were broken. For arena, it was an important moment in swimsuit technology development - shortly afterwards they invited Innovia Technology to help them create next generation competition suits leveraging new insights in science and technology. What did we do? We established a new level of theoretical understanding by integrating fluid mechanics, material science, physiology and psychology. We created prototypes and tested them with competitive swimmers to ensure they delivered meaningful and significant performance benefits in the water. And the results? A few months later, at the 2009 World Championships in Rome, the pool was dominated by swimmers wearing the Powerskin X-Glide, the first suit developed by the collaboration. arena won more gold medals, and broke more World Records than ever before.
