Good day, my name is Lou O'Brien and I'm the federal member for Wide Bay and I'm also the Co chair of the Friends of Rd. Safety Group here in Parliament. Friday the 31st of May is fatality free. Friday. It's a a really important initiative by those great people at the Australian Rd. Safety Foundation. It's a day where we commit to Rd. safety. We commit to strive for a fatality free future. It's a a day where we commit as individuals to be the change that makes that happen. It's also a day where we were reflect and acknowledge that 1273 lives were lost on our roads in 2023. So on fatality free Friday and on everyday, please make that choice. Make that choice to be the change so we can live that fatality free future.
After my car crash i had to reinvent me, because I was no longer ME! BUT my friends in the crash, my family that drove 4 hours to my bed side,my friends who were my family in the city and my extended family who lived in the country, their lives changed! I was alright, I was in a coma with doctors monitoring me! All these people who I love, and who loved me, their lives where messed up, they did not know what was next!
I didnt know anything, I was out cold. My friends in the crash with me, they remembered! They remembered the car rolling, then the car stopping, getting out of the car, getting me out of the car..One friend running barefoot, getting blisters on the sole of her feet, to get help, because her shoes fell off when the car rolled. She run on a country road, gravel & bitumen, my other two friends getting me out of the car as they where not sure if the car would catch fire! One of those friends was concussed but didnt lose consciousness.. My brother and then girlfriend, now wife, left a party to drive 4 hours to the hospital where I had been airlifted! Mum and Dad packed up their lives on the farm that night!
FATALITY FREE FRIDAY, a crash affects more than one person, drive to stay alive..

“But Grady Health System gonna give it to me”
These are the words spoken by Joseph Grier last week admittedly going through a bipolar manic episode as he references his need for medication in an interview last Tuesday, all before he took the life of Ernest Byrd Jr. and hijacked a bus.
Watch the full interview here, the key parts are between:47 – 1:40 https://lnkd.in/ehBhq3Tf
I’d like to first send my condolences to the family of Ernest Byrd Jr. and all those affected. I pray for God’s peace over your pain. To think that a few doses of mental health medication is possibly all that stood in the way of this life being lost pains my heart.
Joseph was keenly aware of what he needed, and how he was being affected, and yet he wasn’t rendered that care. Now he will likely be serving another jail sentence further exacerbating his trauma.
I have so many questions about how this could have been avoided...
11Alive - could the reporter, the cameraman, and his assistants taking this interview have called to get him some help?
City of Atlanta, Fulton County Government, Gwinnett County Government- is there a special mental health emergency hotline that could be called instead of 911? If it were to be 911 would a special mental health-trained officer have been dispatched?
Grady Health Foundation – I’m so glad he knew where to find what he needed, is there a way to ensure he gets it regularly or maybe have it delivered on a schedule?
Emergent BioSolutions – as the manufacturers of Narcan Nasal Spray to combat overdoses, can that same technology be applied for a quick dose of other health threats – like bipolar manic episodes?
In America, we have access to so many resources, yet our own citizens are dying from simple things. Please let’s join this conversation and discuss what WE WILL DO to reduce the likelihood of this happening again.
