Ice Baths don’t win you Gold Medals! Resources matter, but they aren't everything. The latest gear and facilities can help, but in my journey to gold in 2008 and 2016, it was my mindset and my team that made the real difference. With the Olympics just ended and the Paralympics starting next week, it’s easy for athletes to compare their resources to others. The same applies in business—too often, we focus on things that aren't important. Keep it simple. Focus on what truly matters: your mindset, your team, and the process. The outcomes will follow. Visually impaired runner Libby Clegg and Paralympic guide Chris Clarke ran wrist to wrist, perfectly synchronized, and won gold in the 100-meter and 200-meter races at the Paralympic Games in 2016, breaking the Paralympic world record! Interestingly, Clarke didn’t make it for England’s national team and couldn’t compete in the 2016 Olympics, but he made a comeback by partnering with a winner in the 2016 Paralympic. He and Clegg trained for only two months together, and he helped Clegg see what she couldn't see. The takeaway? Winners need opportunity. How will Australia deliver on the vision to #WinWell? Day 2 of #WC2WB kicked off today with a panel conversation unpacking what it means and what it takes to win well. Paralympic athletes Vanessa Low OAM and Angie Ballard talked about the importance of knowing athletes individually, finding ways for each athlete to be at there best when it matters most. The pursuit of “winning well” in a Paralympic context [and arguably every context with the aim of optimising human performance] requires understanding the person, their impairment and unique needs for unlocking performance. A few takeaways on how to go the distance in pursuit of excellence in sport: ✅Value people beyond their performance. ✅ Keep the bigger plan in mind ✅ There is always something that can be done to improve. Last week, the Commission on the State of U.S. Olympics & Paralympics released a report titled "Passing the Torch - Modernizing Olympic, Paralympic, & Grassroots Sports in America." The report touches on a wide range of topics, from support for grassroots initiatives, to the Olympic bid process to the role and independence of the Athletes' Commission. Several findings focus on the state of the American Safe Sport system and the challenges faced by the U.S. Center for SafeSport since it was established in 2017. While still in the process of a detailed consideration of the 277 page report, an initial review highlights numerous lessons learned and parallels that are applicable within the Canadian context, particularly as we continue to navigate the Abuse-Free Sport structure. Notably, a key recommendation highlights that the American system has a structural weakness in their governance model and funding mechanism, with a reliance on user fees paid by national sport governing bodies to support the SafeSport operations, resulting in potential incentives for organizations to deter participants from coming forward with complaints of misconduct. This structure undermines the trust in the independence and accountability of the entire system. In recommending that the U.S. Center be structured as an independent agency which is directly (and fully) funded by the federal government, the Commission notes that “...if athletes’ safety is as much a public value as fair competition, SafeSport needs to have public support.” More to come. https://www.csusop.org/ #safeguarding #safesport #linkedinsports

European Para Championships receives extended patronage from European Paralympic Committee The European Paralympic Committee has renewed its patronage to the European Para Championships, providing crucial support in various capacities. This support includes the endorsement of the Games stamp, facilitating communication with European Paralympic Committee members, and contributing to the ongoing development of the European Para Championships across the continent. The shared goal is to host the European Para Championships every four years. Leveraging its affiliations with the International Paralympic Committee and the European Union, the European Paralympic Committee will actively promote the expansion and enhancement of the European Para Championships, not only in upcoming cycles but at least until the 2035 edition. Presently encompassing 10 sports, both the European Paralympic Committee and European Para Championships management envision a broader horizon for the Championships. Aspiring to welcome additional International Federations, if feasible within the concept, in subsequent editions in 2027, 2031, 2035, and beyond.
