A year ago I started volunteering at a Repair Cafe. Taking on wobbly chairs, broken picture frames and even an ornamental Danish monkey, every month brings on a new challenge. I always considered this separate from my IT career, but I recently realised that at its heart I love both because I really enjoy problem solving, good communication and working in a great team. Its as simple as 1) talk to the client and work out their needs, understand what they really want and why, hear the human story 2) analyse the product in front of me, learn what it used to do, come up with options and strategies and use that knowledge to clarify the details of the client's wants 3) come up with a prototype or dry fix, show the client how its gonna look and feel, demonstrate where the compromises' are 4) come up with a plan that completes the task in small steps allowing me to deal with any adjustments as I go along 5) get on with the job, keep the client in the loop as much as they want and deliver a great result Volunteering isn't about money; it's about crafting joy and leaving a legacy. I get nervous fixing a family heirloom, but the gratitude is priceless. IT Solution Design isn't always sexy, but I can get the same joy out of a well designed integration between disparate systems. Making an Impact: Donating Old Branded Items to a Local School In a world where environmental consciousness and community involvement are becoming increasingly important, our team recently embarked on a mission to do our part. We decided to take a step towards sustainability and social responsibility by donating our Hornbill Industrial Training Limited branded items to a local school. This endeavour not only aligns with our commitment to being environmentally friendly but also allowed us to make a positive impact within our community. Our journey towards sustainability began with a simple question: "How can we reduce waste and make a difference in our community?" The answer was to give new life to branded items that were no longer in use. We realised that while these items might no longer serve a purpose for us, they could still be of great value to others. With this in mind, OCU Academy, Neath reached out to a local school in our community. We were welcomed with open arms by the school's administration, who were delighted to receive our donation. The branded items, including bags, mugs and stationery, were well-received by both students and educators. It's heartwarming to see these items being put to good use, benefiting the school and its students. Our initiative to donate old, branded items not only has an environmental impact but also strengthens our bonds with the local community. We believe that the key to a prosperous and harmonious society lies in cooperation and support. By giving back to the community, we hope to inspire others to do the same. Our commitment to environmental sustainability remains unwavering. We continue to find innovative ways to reduce waste and support eco-friendly practices within our organisation. Our donation to the school is just one example of how a small change in our daily operations can have a ripple effect, inspiring positive change in our community.
