In 2021 the president of the EU Ursula von der Leyen announced a new European Care strategy with the following words: “If the pandemic taught us one thing, it is that time is precious. And caring for someone you love is the most precious time of all. We will come forward with a new European Care Strategy to support men and women in finding the best care and the best life balance for them.” (von der Leyen, 2021) Daria Litvina and I have analysed policy papers by the president, commission, and policy reports from 2013-2022 with a special attention to the framing of old age and old age care and this new strategy. We identify a polyphonic discourse that includes feminist elements and gender stereotypes, as well as silencing. It applies neoliberal rationales with paternalistic elements. Its a choir of many voices, but it shows the emergence of a new policy field in the EU that builds upon an imaginary of European values. In late May, my article “Conversations in couple relationships: a trustful foundation when making future parenthood ‘real’” was published in  Frontier in Sociology. The article aims to understand the role of conversation patterns among first-time parents in mitigating uncertainty about future parenting (in the prenatal phase). We will see how reality is made understandable and concrete in the conversational practice, but also how the communication legitimizes family practices as "democratic" when referring to future plans as emerging from consensual dialogue. However, in the article the risk is discussed, that the stability and trust offered at the conversational simultaneously may consolidate the interests of a stronger party, and in this way reproduce gender inequality and counteract the welfare policy goal of equalizing power relationships. https://lnkd.in/dHAjaMkk

🚀 We are excited to be partner in the pioneering 4e-Parent Project, funded by the European Commission’s Justice Programme. This project aims to foster a new vision of fatherhood and #masculinity,  to prevent and counter gender-based #violence. 📈Scientific research suggests that #fathers who are practically and empathetically involved in parenting from the earliest stages can promote cognitive, social and emotional development in their #children, strengthen emotional bonds, improve psycho-physical health and promote #GenderEquality. Initiated in January 2023, the project’s lays in a integrated approach, aligned with the global fatherhood @MenCare campaign, to promote the awareness and responsibility of fathers as an essential method for addressing various these current issues. 🔍 Deep Blue's role includes project management support and contribution of expertise in #psychology and #sociology, by actively developing impactful training courses for health and social care staff, who address these complex issues. 💡Reshaping the traditional narrative on gender roles and fatherhood is crucial, and the significance of new instruments and technologies cannot be overstated. It is also true that psychology used to be overwhelmingly male (see: Freud). Back in the 1950s, 75% of all advanced degrees in the field went to men. By 1976, though, a big influx of women into psychology – with no corresponding increase of men – put the profession at gender parity. Even more striking is what has happened in the half-century since. As the US population has grown by more than 100 million people – and the number of women getting advanced psychology degrees quadrupled to more than 30,000 – the number of men getting such degrees has remained dead flat at about 7,500 a year for 45 years.
