During the conceptual design phase of what would become two of the popular widebody jets, Airbus discovered that North American carriers wanted twin-engine aircraft, primarily for their inter-regional operations. Comac Unveils Stretched, Shortened C919 Variants China’s Comac has unveiled stretched and shortened variants of its C919 narrowbody aircraft, which the OEM says are aimed at catering for the various operational requirements in and around China. Named the C919 Stretched Variant and the C919 Shortened/Plateau Variant, the two concepts were revealed at the Shanghai International Commercial Aviation & Aerospace Industry Exhibition. Sizing up and down its standard narrowbody to create a family of aircraft for different requirements would replicate Airbus’ A320 family and Boeing’s 737 MAX family variations. Boeing predicts twofold increase in Middle East aircraft fleet by 2042 Boeing forecasts a surge in the Middle East’s commercial aircraft fleet, projecting a more than twofold increase by 2042. The aviation giant predicts an extensive demand for around 3,025 new jets in the region over the next two decades. Boeing hit by quality lapses, certification delays; Airbus soars to dominance While Boeing’s leadership scrambled to contain its latest crisis — following the in-flight door plug blowout on an Alaska Airlines 737 MAX 9 — top executives at Airbus confidently laid out the rival’s success in 2023 and its dominance of the commercial airliner business. The data on last year’s jet orders and deliveries released by both manufacturers shows Airbus was the world’s No. 1 airplane maker for the fifth straight year and pulling away from its U.S. competitor. Good article by Richard Aboulafia here on the need for an engine for a mid-market aircraft. Currently, there is a gap in the market for this type of plane. Boeing has declined to build something for this market space.
