Lets take a #break from #Tourism and talk about Cultural Significance in Office Culture. #Oktoberfest 🍺 is now behind us, and it's a suitable time for #reflection. This year, I indulged a bit too much at the world's largest #folkfestival. In fact, I was even invited by a few companies to join their table and also attended with my colleagues from Geisel Privathotels (which is nicely called #GeiselWiesn) However, upon reflection, I realize that this may be perceived differently in a different setting. A few years ago, while working for another company in Israel, an American colleague was offended by a team-building activity that involved alcohol. In Germany, having a beer is not particularly unusual (though it's worth noting that Oktoberfest beer is stronger). The legal drinking age for beer and wine is only 16. However, in the United States, where alcoholism is a concern for many, such activities might inadvertently pressure someone into drinking for the sake of the job. This serves as another reminder of the importance of #localculture and the need to #respect it but at the same time to learn and know your colleagues. WHY is Cinco de Mayo celebrated in the United States?🇲🇽🥳 Whether you break out the chips, guacamole and tacos or enjoy a margarita during this year's Cinco de Mayo, the truth is that Cinco de Mayo means more than just enjoying Mexican cuisine. Have you ever wondered, “What does Cinco de Mayo mean?” According to Time, U.S. beer🍻 companies were looking to target their products to the growing Spanish-speaking population starting in the 1970s and 1980s.  The recent surge in popularity of Cinco de Mayo festivities has a lot to do with the increased marketing efforts of U.S. companies. This is how the holiday evolved into what we know today, although for some it is also seen as simply a day to be proud of Mexican heritage. The historical roots and commercialization of Cinco de Mayo are the reasons why Cinco de Mayo is celebrated in the United States, even more so than in the country of Mexico itself.

Some time ago, during a national Pisco contest, a sample of amber-colored Pisco was presented. The table coordinator called the Director of Tasting to inform that this sample was outside the norm, atypical, and would not be evaluated. According to the Royal Spanish Academy dictionary, atypical means "That which, by its characteristics, deviates from representative models or known types." It was the only time I saw a sample disqualified, and rightly so, as the Regulations of the Pisco Appelation of Origin in Article 7.1 Organoleptic Requirements state that Pisco must have a clear, colorless, transparent & bright appearance. The issue of whether a Pisco is atypical or not is worth considering. In the 2009 OIV Standards for International Wine and Spirits Competitions of Vitivinicultural Origin, the word atypical does not appear anywhere. The celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month, now till October 15  in the United States, is a time that honors the cultures of American citizens whose ancestors came from Central and South America, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Spain. A big part of the cultural heritage that many Latinx people share in this country is food. The passing of recipes from generations who had to immigrate and migrate to the United States has kept many close to their home countries. In the past 500 years since the colonization of Latin America, the gastronomy has evolved due to international influences. When the Spaniards brought African slaves to the Americas, the slaves also brought their foods and recipes to the new world. For example, plantains, a staple of many Cuban, Puerto Rican, and Dominican dishes, come from the African heritage. Arroz chaufa (fried rice) of Peru originates from the Chinese immigrants who settled there, and Argentina’s popular dishes such as la Milanesa find their origins in Italy. The migration of Latin American cuisine continues in the United States as immigrants reinvent their favorite family dishes, especially those who live in areas with little access to their native ingredients. This can be reflected in many menus across the country.
