What do tequila producers do for more sustainable production? The tequila sector is at the forefront promoting the first deforestation-free certification, for alcoholic beverages worldwide. The agave used as raw material for tequila production, must be the specie tequilana blue weber variety, must have been cultivated in the territory covered by the denomination of origin, and be registered in the Land Plantation Registry. CRT (Tequila Regulatory Council) created a new requirement to register agave plantations, the certification ARA prevents deforestation of 7,000 hectares in Jalisco, Mexico. ARA (Agave responsable ambiental) projects that by 2027, 100% of the tequila produced, will be “deforestation free”. This is an added value to tequila, the new agave producers should be aware of these measurements, no more agave plantations, where the soil is not the best for the agave growth. For responsible sipping and helping the earth. Salud! #earthday #tequilaculture #agroindustry #consumerawareness #qualitynotquantity

On Saturday, I ran the ultra marathon in Tequila, Jalisco. 43 kilometers (27 miles) through tequila distilleries, agave fields, and pine-oak woodlands including a summit of the 2,930 meter (9,612 ft) Tequila volcano. To prepare for the race, I went down a rabbit hole into the ancestral roots of tequila, its smoky brother mezcal, and agave, tequila’s parent plant. Agave distillates like tequila and mezcal are the culmination of a 10,000-year, co-evolutionary relationship between agave and humanity. Agave was a cultural keystone for Mesoamericans throughout México and the Southwest United States. Humanity depended on agave for food, fiber, fuel, and shelter, and, in return, agave depended on humanity to maintain a fertile environment for her offspring. Agave was essential to the development of civilization. She taught Mesoamericans how to live symbiotically with the environment. Diverse agroforestry systems and artisanal mezcal production instilled patience, commitment, integrity, resilience, and resourcefulness in culture. Much of this culture continues today in the mezcal business. Maestro mezcaleros often manage their own farms with several species of agave and produce the mezcal with firewood, draft animals, and millstones in small batches. Tequila, on the other hand, is characterized by expansive monoculture fields of genetic clones and massive industrial machinery. The story of agave, mezcal, and tequila shows that when we change agricultural practices from symbiotic to industrialized, we change the culture of society from balanced and reciprocal to excessive and extractive. As we cultivate the land, the land cultivates us. However, we can re-cultivate a symbiotic culture starting by supporting symbiotic agri-culture. Whether you farm, work in the food system, or just eat, everyone can contribute to changing the agricultural system and cultural values. https://lnkd.in/gBJagWVY #regeneration #sustainability #regenerativeagriculture #consciouscapitalism #foodsystems

Fruitful Friendship: The Avocado's Journey with Giant Ground Sloths The #Avocado, a beloved and nutritious fruit, has a fascinating history that owes much to an unexpected ally - the Giant Ground Sloths. These massive creatures once roamed the earth during the Pleistocene epoch, approximately 2.6 million to 11,700 years ago, and their unique habits played a crucial role in shaping the avocado's evolution and cultivation. With their large size and slow movements, Giant Ground Sloths became effective dispersers of avocado seeds throughout their natural habitat in Central and South America. Feeding on #avocados, they unintentionally aided in seed distribution through their feces, fostering the growth of #avocadotrees in diverse environments. This remarkable seed dispersal behavior had a profound impact on the biodiversity of the regions they inhabited, allowing avocado trees to adapt to different climates and ecological niches and thus expanding the avocado's range. Today, this fascinating bond reminds us of the intricate web of ecological relationships that have shaped our natural world. From their ancient partnership in seed dispersal to the cultivation of avocados in modern times, this unique tale highlights the importance of preserving biodiversity. So, the next time you enjoy a delicious avocado, take a moment to appreciate the legacy of this ancient alliance and appreciate the significant impact it had on the growth and evolution of the avocado. Follow us for more. #canacado #canacadorootstocks #plantation #avocadocultivation #orchard

This is a clear demonstration of unintended consequences. We all love avocados. But 90% of them now come from Mexico. And the food industry in the US and Canada has been shamelessly promoting consumption with a complete disregard to the consequences. In Mexico, forests are being cleared - often at gunpoint and without any government approval - to make way for avocado plantations. The avocado tree consumes 14 times as much water as pine trees, which are native to the volcanic hills in western Mexico. So now, water is being stolen from residents and farmers, and piped into avocado plantations. This is draining the natural aquifers to the point of exhaustion, which will lead to a crisis for more than one Mexican state. The next time you load up on avocados, think about the unintended consequences. #avocado #foodsystems #sustainabledevelopment

BIER's innovative, first-of-its-kind watershed collaboration Charco Bendito project involves seven BIER members and two non-BIER members working collaboratively to conserve 355 hectares as a goal. To date, progress has been made with 125 restored hectares of important land to improve the quality and quantity of water in the region. Key activities include planting native vegetation to increase groundwater levels and reduce soil loss, improving water infrastructure, and increasing awareness about the importance of water to healthy communities. You can learn more about these activities at this year's #WorldWaterWeek. Join us for the presentation, Charco Bendito: BIER’s Unprecedented Watershed Collaboration in Jalisco, Mexico, on Monday, August 21, 2023, at #WorldWaterWeek. Learn why and how global beverage and food leaders collaborated to develop and implement this innovative basin-level watershed initiative that addresses three main goals: water accessibility, quality, and availability. The session will share the model used to develop this initiative, how it is governed and financed, and the plans for the future, including scaling to have bigger impacts. - Date: Monday, August 21, 2023 - Time: 18:00 - 19:00 - Location: Online - Session ID: 10888 Register: https://bit.ly/43GeKrV #WWWeek #bevco #watershed #waterconservation #innovation #collaboration #waterstewardship #environmentalsustainability
