Connecting Graduates and Businesses

I hear “My experience isn’t relevant…” suprisingly often.   As a recruiter, I wanted to share my own experience and disprove this.   Last week, a candidate said something similar; “But my past experience isn’t relevant to the role I want?”.   The sad part is, they couldn’t have been more wrong.   The job they wanted required the ability to handle pressure, people skills, and organisational skills.   All of these skills they learnt whilst working part-time at a bar. However, they couldn’t see that because they were focusing on the hard skills (all of which can be learnt).   We all need to value our experience, especially in our early days, and especially hospitality. Working in hospitality is DIFFICULT.   For example, my work as a recruiter requires skills such as communication, patience, the ability to handle stress, and multitasking. All of which I learnt at one point or another through working part-time in cafes and bars.   I learnt the majority of my communication, stress handling, and multitasking from working in a café at the age of 16.   I developed my confidence and people skills from working in a bar at until I was 21.   The latte art (whilst pretty) might not be transferable, but the rest certainly is.   When looking for skills and experience to highlight on your CV or in an interview, do not undervalue your less ‘relevant’ work history. Look for the transferable skills.   What are your thoughts on this? #cvtips #interviewadvice #skillbuilding #graduatecareers #skills
