It is interesting to be part of a film society in 2023 – a time when its raison d'être faces more questions than ever before, given that watching a film has never been easier! In times like these, it is important for student-led film societies to realise that embracing technology, albeit with caution, is more useful than standing in its way, and evolving with time is a sign of strength, not weakness. One notable example here is the International Inter University Short Film Festival, which began in 2007 by Dhaka University Film Society, prior to the wide availability and use of the internet in the country. However, by harnessing the power of technology in the following years, the festival has evolved to platform, promote and capacitate student filmmakers globally. This year alone, 1671 short films by student filmmakers from 96 countries competed in the festival. As the curtain falls on the 15th edition, and my involvement with this festival for over half a decade also comes to an end, it is reassuring to know that the festival has become something bigger than all of us with a life of its own, and will continue to grow for the years to come.  #IIUSFF #DUFS #FilmSocietyMovement

Spotlight on Sweden 💡 The Southern Sweden Film Commission, a member of CineRegio Green, is one of the advocates for sustainability within the Swedish film and TV industry. Some of the efforts that the commission has contributed this past year are as follows: • Throughout the past year, the Swedish sustainability tool; Hållbar film, has been updating its content and workflow thanks to the support of the Swedish film funds. As the film commissioners have wanted for a long time, they have now also launched a version in English, making it more accessible for coproductions. The tool is created to shift filmmakers’ mindsets around the production process and works especially well for making sustainability plans. The tool consists of 100 organizational, environmental and social sustainability questions. It has been inspired by gamification to enhance user-friendliness, as it takes you through a planning, production and evaluation phase. The first was a panel discussion at the Nordic Film Market which showcased case studies of sustainable film productions by Swedish and Danish producers. The other was a study where a regular TV series budget was compared to a more sustainable budget, taking both social and environmental aspects into consideration, which pointed towards savings of up to 1 million SEK through the more sustainable choices. What I love dearly about playing tennis is the connections I make all over the world with people in the tennis world and Adrian has such a unique vision to basically do a Soho House of tennis (all the special access to unique tennis experiences and meeting eclectic people from all over the world). It's not easy to execute a vision like the one Adrian Calvert is realizing because, well, tennis is quite a peculiar and insular world even though it is the most popular international sport that we watch and participate in (who hasn't at least grabbed a racket and hit a ball or two or gone to the grand slams or Indian Wells or has a kid playing tennis or use tennis life lessons (process over outcome). I've been expanding my exploration of The Nugget from Joan Scheckel's Joan Scheckel Filmmaking Labs and The Technique in my storytelling and the core of what it is I was able to really explore in London yesterday at the Moth StorySlam where I saw firsthand how telling a feeling-based story to an audience truly resonates (we call this Reclaiming the Loop) and then the next day, chatting with Adrian about his All Court Tennis company about what his nugget is. Deeply enjoying exploring the storytelling craft in so many forms. PS: Be careful who you associate with when you're seeking filmmaking collaborators -go under the hood a bit (this includes going under the hood about me) you can really see who's an artisan and who is just an expert of their digital facade. Anyone can say I'm a "screenwriter" or I'm a "producer" etc all it takes is to type those words, pursue a few endorsements and make a connection with a few people on here as if they have actually worked with the connection but really, people these days are very very good at curating the perfect digital profile. A lot of it is just Wizard of Oz behind the digital curtain.

SPI in partnership with the AFCI | Association of Film Commissioners International, are set to update and expand the Best Practice in Screen Sector Development study.   Originally launched in 2019, the study was a first-of-its-kind analysis of the strategies, policies, and other interventions used by governments worldwide to maximise their share of the screen production market.   The updated study will expand on the scope of the initial analysis, insights and case studies, considering the changes in the global screen sector over the past five years. https://lnkd.in/dnsq6kgX

Up-and-coming film creatives are invited to apply for AI-themed edition of Talents Sarajevo by March 8th, coinciding with the 30th edition of the Sarajevo Film Festival! In just a few years, the term "artificial intelligence" has evolved from a sci-fi concept into an omnipresent element in our daily lives. While it's clear that AI is a far cry from the ominous "humans against machines" scenarios (from HAL 9000 to those pesky Terminators), the catastrophic rhetoric surrounding AI still persists. According to one view, AI is nothing less than the harbinger of the end of creativity as an essential human trait. Consequently, anything produced by AI is deemed a mere parody of true art, inevitably leading towards the destruction of culture and humanity. ART/FICIAL aims to challenge the apocalyptic narrative surrounding the relationship between AI and cinema. We contend that AI, far from being an artistic nemesis, represents a technological milestone contributing to the redefinition and transformation of cinema, rather than its demise. Similar to past technological advancements, AI will bring about both positive and negative consequences. The crucial first step in addressing these implications is to demystify AI as a tool, emphasizing that its impact depends on the individuals employing it. While most information about the impact of AI on the film industry comes from Hollywood, ART/FICIAL aims to specifically address the local/regional experience in that regard. To what extent and in what ways is AI present in the film region covered by the Sarajevo Film Festival? ART/FICIAL extends an invitation to emerging film creatives from the region to join Talents Sarajevo in exploring the intersection of AI and cinema, considering their own experiences of working with AI or their decision to abstain from doing so. Talents Sarajevo, founded in collaboration with Berlin International Film Festival and Berlinale Talents, has become the foremost regional hub for meeting and training aspiring film professionals. It’s mission is to provide unconditional support to up-and-coming filmmakers from the region by facilitating their creative and professional advancement and success through a program of master classes, project labs, lectures, discussions, and screenings. The 30th Sarajevo Film Festival will take place from 16th to 23rd August 2024.
