After 14 months of intense fighting, the situation in #Sudan is dire: 25.6 million people face crisis levels of food insecurity, meaning these households are skipping meals or using vital resources to meet food needs. 8.5 million people are facing emergency levels of hunger. They have large gaps between meals and are using all possible strategies to access food. 750,000 people on the brink of famine. In these areas, malnutrition is widespread and people are dying of starvation. The conflict in Sudan is creating unlivable conditions for the population, hunger being one of the most widespread. It was supposed to be a time for family visits, sharing of food and messages of peace and blessings, but instead this year in Gaza, both Easter and Ramadan has been a time of sadness, loneliness and lack. Abu Yusuf says his family and many others he knows have resorted to cooking the weeds that grow during the winter when the rains fall. They are all down to one meal a day, and often when there is nothing to make bread with, they will grind rabbit feed and use that as a flour. While aid trucks have been entering Gaza, not nearly the same amount of aid has been allowed in since the war started. Roughly about 500 aid trucks are needed daily to cover the basic needs of the people in Gaza, but since the war started the number of trucks topped 300 a day - the last time being during the week-long cease-fire. Some days as little as 10 trucks have made it in. Our partners in the region, Shepherd Society, are reaching out to those in their immediate communities with food packs containing essential items. Currently these temporary measures are all that they can do, and as long as the crisis continues this type of support is a lifeline of hope. Haiti is remaining in a long-standing political, security and humanitarian crisis. Last year, there was an outbreak of cholera. More than half of Haitians are chronically food insecure, and 22 percent of children are chronically malnourished. Over a third of the population lacks access to clean water and two-thirds have limited or no sanitation service. Gang violence and the cholera outbreak may keep over 2.4 million children out of classrooms, UNICEF warned. Our hearts are with Haiti. Massive killings and human suffering continue in #Gaza. 45% of all housing units have been destroyed or damaged, and entire neighbourhoods have been reduced to rubble. 219 educational complexes have been hit. Among them, UNRWA schools that were being used as emergency shelters for the internally displaced. 76 attacks have been reported on health care. 20 hospitals and 24 ambulances have been affected. As a result of the lack of food, many internally displaced people are only having one meal per day. Malnutrition is a real risk, especially for children and pregnant and lactating women. Water is running out. The electricity blackout and the lack of fuel make it impossible for water facilities to operate. In view of this catastrophic situation, Mercy Hands is striving to provide food and water to the most affected.
