The weight loss boom is pushing consumers to spend more on protein supplement products, according to new data from The Vitamin Shoppe’s 2024 Health & Wellness Trend Report. The report is an annual study of 2,000 Americans that provides insight into top consumer trends in the nutritional supplements industry. As more Americans take weight loss treatments such as GLP-1 drugs, they also are seeking ways to replace key nutrients like protein, as the medications are associated with muscle loss and other side effects.

Before starting to buy (often expensive and hyped, sometimes even dangerous) supplements check if you have really optimised the following: (1) Food; how much of the necessary supplements (vitamins, proteine, minerals, other elements) are already covered by your current nutrition and how can you change your current nutrition to get the optimal intake of these supplements? Often is easier than you think: add some red meat to your diet for creatine, increase your fish intake for omega III, chicken and tuna for proteine, raw vegetables for vitamins and fibres etc.. If you looking to use more peticular supplements like magnesium (claimed to decrease musclepain) or zinc (important for your hormone production) check which foods contain high amounts of such supplement and simply eat it more.. For magnesium that would be raw spinach, nuts and seeds and for zinc oisters, but more common: beef and lamb.. (2) Sleep: do you get enough rest? Training a lot, eating properly but not giving your body enough time to recuperate and heal from the heavy training is not effective.. Research shows that at least 7-8 hours of sleep are needed to recover completely from vigurous workouts.. (3) Programme; take a look again at your training programme.. It should be effective, focussed on the goals you want to achieve and constantly ‘surprise’ your muscles.. Use periodisation in your programme, focus on the different phases of the musclecontraction (concentric, eccentric and isometric), use timing and change the number of reps to change between hypertrophy and stamina of your muscles.. (4) Water; are you drinking enough water? Hydrating your body is of essential importance, not only to detox, but also to hydrate your joints to improve their performance and avoid joint pain.. As a basic package of supplements I would advise start using 100% whey proteine powder (for muscle growth) and omega 3 (to lower cholesterol).. If your training gets more intense you can think of adding BCAA’s (3 essential aminoacids as fastworking building blocks for your muscles) and creatine (to increase the performance of your muscles).. Finally: always check what the supplements you take contain of.. Sometimes they don't agree with medicines you take or are dangerous if you exceed the daily dose.. And most importantly: don't be deceived by the marketing lies and nonsense of the supplement industry! Good luck! #letmetrainyou
