I'm honored to be in such distinguished company with fellow honorees on Washingtonian Magazine 500 Most Influential People of 2024 list. But I'm even more honored to be a communicator highlighted in a Foreign Affairs list. I've spent my whole career in communications, and at nearly every step I've had colleagues who thought that comms meant a press release and talking points that came after the real work was done. They just didn't get that the incredible power of storytelling could make or break their work - or, if they understood it, they couldn't fully harness it. That's especially true in foreign affairs, where there's often a strong prejudice to "not loop in comms yet" as policies are being developed, people are hired, or sensitive national security issues being discussed (and we can have a whole other conversation about how more women-coded professions like comms bump against the reality of a foreign affairs bureaucracy that is still overly male, pale, and Yale relative to the nation it serves). But I think it's changing for the better. More and more, good leaders get that even the best policy won't survive contact with reality if the timing, message, and messenger aren't right. I've been blessed to work with leaders who understand the power of stories: stories that affirm our values and resolve, stories that shake us up and move us to action, stories that help us see our place in the world and what the world could become. They think about how our adversaries use stories and incorporate that into our foreign policy. When it works, it's incredible - think revealing Russia's plots to invade Ukraine, or exposing the reality of life under ISIS and disrupting its flow of foreign fighters. I'm a communicator because I love storytelling and and am awed by the influence stories have on our lives. Being on this list tells me that other people in foreign affairs and national security feel the same. https://lnkd.in/e29acZ5u

Great article discussing the impact of Theatrical organizations in your area.
"Bottom line, if the arts are happening there, there is a measurable economic impact on that community." A new study shows that local art has an impact on economic development. Many Main Streeters have already seen this effect in their work. We should continue to support rich local arts scenes as part of our efforts to create vibrant communities. Getting a snapshot, getting a flavour of a moment in the Motivational Maps conference last Friday where #engagement is at a peak! The great Kate Turner is directing proceedings and our wonderful guest from #Vienna, Katarina Posa, mustn't miss a minute of meaning - so is photographing results! - the marvellous Linda Sale FRSA is benignly looking on to make sure everyone is well-behaved (less she use her Tai Chi skills!) and the excellent Cassandra Andrews is on her knees praying for the right result!!! Can you spot what others are thinking/doing? Some - cleverly of course - have absented themselves from the picture's frame! Who are they?
