As children we often heard that the lion was the king of the jungle and took it as a fact. But as we grew up, we learned that lions do not actually live in dense forests or jungles but in open places like savannas. This makes you wonder, why were we taught this seemingly wrong idea? Well, calling the lion the “king of the jungle” is only a metaphorical expression. It is more about what the lion stands for than where it lives. Honouring te Tiriti, what does that even mean? Tangata Tiriti are non- Māori peoples who honour our Tiriti. A mistake some people make is thinking that by saying you honour te Tiriti, is enough. It’s not. You need to realise that TRUST is involved when saying these words, and your actions need to express that you can be trusted by Māori. Being Tangata Tiriti is about being committed to learn about: Te Tiriti o Waitangi Colonisation and Privilege Your identity as Pākehā Te Ao Māori, the Māori world When you have an awareness of all the above and stand strong in your Pākehā culture, and believe in Tino Rangatiratanga – Mana Motuhake, then you will be Tangata Tiriti. You don’t need to do all the learning at once. You just need to start the journey or move further along the path. We are in this together. Let those further along support you. If you’re working on a large or complex project, watch this video! This parable about the blind men and the elephant reminds me of the value of strong leadership on large complex projects. At the same time it highlights importance of listening, empathy, and compassion between teams and individuals. On reflection, the most rewarding moments in my career have come from resisting the urge to provide (what I thought was the best) solution straight away. Instead, I first listen deeply to the thoughts, ideas, and perspectives of my colleagues and clients. After understanding their realities, we then build a better solution together. As a nation, we need to reflect on the values and philosophies that shape our mindset and influence the next generation. Public assets such as hospitals, clinics, education institutions, airports, and shops are meant to serve us, and they also provide jobs for many Papua New Guineans. However, it is concerning that some people in our society still engage in destructive behaviour such as looting and burning down these organizations. We need to develop a mindset that restrains us and reminds us that it is wrong to destroy and loot from these organizations, and it is not acceptable to benefit from the proceeds of such actions. Only then can we expect to see positive change in our society. #ideology #philosophy #values #leadership #mindset #employmentopportunities
