DBS Foundation is now the anchor partner for the ComLink+ Progress Packages for Preschool and for Home Ownership, which will be supporting lower-income families with children. It involves the contribution of over SGD 30 million to fully support the community-funded portion for these packages over the three years – projected to benefit around 8,500 children and 1,400 families respectively per year. The bank will also mobilise 400 DBS employees to serve as volunteer befrienders to the families and journey with them, aimed at helping the families make sustainable progress towards their long-term financial goals. This is the first initiative under the bank’s SGD 1 billion pledge to uplift vulnerable segments of society over the coming decade. Digital Poverty Alliance and Deloitte have reported that approximately 13-19 million people over the age of 16 are experiencing some form of digital poverty. We know that in order for communities to thrive digital access is essential. Several banks, including HSBC, Santander, TSB Bank, Metrobank, and The Co-operative Bank plc, provide specialised financial support for survivors of financial abuse, demonstrating a positive commitment to addressing this issue. My heart is full. I have 3 values, one of them is making a difference. One of the ways I make a difference is through my volunteer work as a Director of my local Bendigo Bank Community Bank. Recently we celebrated our 20th anniversary with 240 guests from our community at our Emerald Ball. An event designed to honour the legacy of our founding steering committee and directors and staff past and present, and to showcase some of our local community organisations. We have now reinvested over $190k on the night, which brings us to almost $1.7k in total. Collectively with our other Community Banks across Australia, the network has given back over $320 million over the past 25 years. And all we need is for more people to bank with us. When you bank with us we create a continuous stream of funds for our local community. Can you do that with your banking? It is a powerful model, the only one of its kind in the world. The Bendigo Bank community network exists to help our communities to thrive. Feeding into prosperity not off it by reinvesting profits back to local community organisations. When the opportunity came up for me to join the board I had a 9-month-old baby and a 3-month-old business and my head said, "No. You don't have the time or the energy." But my heart said, "You have to do this." This is one of the ways I make a difference. This is a great product for Canadians and will also be a proof point around resilient funding models for charities. Really exciting to be a part of this type of innovation in the Canadian market between two orgs looking to help Canadians. Financial literacy tools are more important than ever in this climate where families face a cost of living crisis.

Another day, another story about "debanking"! The initial findings of the FCA over the summer declared that "no firm closed an account...primarily because of a customer’s political views". It should be noted, however, that this review was very narrow in that it concerned itself only with accounts closed for political reasons. Note also that the word "primarily" is doing an awful lot of heavy lifting here! It is, of course, entirely possible that staff at banks identified customers with whose politics they disagreed, and then sought other reasons why their accounts should be closed, as the Nigel Farage case seemed to demonstrate. The article below points to another issue that the FCA clearly identified in its Press Release on its initial findings when it declared that the anti-discrimination measures in the Payment Accounts Regulations do not apply to various institutions including charities. The open letter issued by the three Charity Regulators and the FCA's Press Release (link in comments) clearly demonstrates that a lot more work and action is urgently needed in this whole area. #banking #financialservices #finance #regulation #FCA #debanking
