"Five years after launching IncludED, graduation rates are up 10 percentage points and retention at Dallas College is steadily climbing. This program has saved students over $46 million annually on course materials! That type of impact means the world to me and to those students and parents! Education is expensive! One of our goals is to keep our programs as affordable as possible, by offering credit for industry training and some life experience. Our tuition is set by the Washington State Legislature, who keeps it as low as possible. We're very transparent about the actual costs per credit, which includes some fees, and you can calculate them yourself using our handy tuition calculator at https://lnkd.in/e32ezrfE. All of our classes are E-Learning classes and are charged at the level of the course (100/200 level courses at the Associate level, 300/400 level courses at the Bachelor level). We also limit the use of "single use" textbooks in our courses, instead opting for books that will be used in multiple courses or open access or academic journal articles instead. "Research shows that the proliferation of inclusive access policies in recent years has also helped lead to a dramatic drop in the price of course materials. In the 2007 to 2008 academic year, students spent an average of $701 each year on course materials, according to the National Association of College Stores. By 2022, students were spending just $285". Not only do these programs lower the cost of education but they empower student success because they have easy access to those materials they need to succeed in the course on Day One without having to choose between their course materials and groceries. During Open Education Week, the OER team at UTA took a moment to reflect on the real cost of textbooks and its impact on students’ lives. Outside the library, we asked students a simple, yet thought-provoking question: “If you did not have to buy a textbook, what would you do with the money?” The responses were as diverse as our student body, each one shedding light on the varied lives and dreams of our students. From the essentials like food and rent to the heartwarming—like buying a sweet treat or saving for a future without financial stress—each answer painted a picture of the hopes and day-to-day realities our students face. This event was not just about gathering responses; it was a powerful reminder of why we advocate for Open Educational Resources. Each dollar saved on textbooks is a step toward a more equitable and accessible education. It’s about real-life impacts, about futures made brighter, and opportunities made possible. As we continue to champion the use of OER, we are reminded that at the heart of our work are the students and their stories, their challenges, and their triumphs. Let’s keep pushing forward, making education open and accessible to all, one resource at a time.
