Performing a survey for a client on Beacon Hill. Came across these brick units with numbers scribed into them. The building was erected in the early 1900s (don't hold me to that). Does anyone have an idea as to what these numbers represent? #brickmasonry #masonry #buildingconsulting

Interesting! I'd love to say I knew this on my own, but thanks to chatGPT, here are a few possible reasons... Identification: Bricks were often marked with numbers or codes by the manufacturer for identification purposes. This allowed builders, contractors, and architects to track the source and quality of the bricks used in construction projects. Quality Control: The numbers on bricks could also indicate specific quality control measures or standards set by the manufacturer. Builders could use these markings to ensure that they were using bricks of consistent quality and durability. Batch or Lot Number: Each batch or lot of bricks produced by a manufacturer may have been assigned a unique number or code. This helped in tracing the origin of the bricks and identifying any issues or defects associated with a particular production run. Historical Record: The numbers on bricks serve as a historical record of the manufacturing process and can provide valuable information for researchers, historians, and preservationists studying buildings and structures from the past.
