The reputation of Barrick Gold Corporation's Kibali gold mine in the DRC, is being significantly enhanced by its far-reaching contribution to the development and upkeep of key infrastructure, the building of a vibrant local socio-economy, protection of the environment, restoration of game in national parks, and even the revitalisation of an attention-catching #coffee cultivation opportunity. If you don't live in a mining state, it's very easy to miss this shift in Australia. One lesson I learned at BHP was that a secure power supply was critical. If you look at Newman, you'll see there's BHP's Yarnima power station next to Alinta's power station as a legacy to this lesson. In 2024, Australia imports its diesel. So swapping over to renewables and electrification - securing your power supply - doesn't just make sense for decarbonisation but also business continuity and cost control. This also means our power generation will need to meet the increased power demands as diesel is phased out. New technology and AI will increase power needs. Mining deeper and more difficult ores, and processing more material onshore (I'm looking at you green iron) will also demand more power in remote areas. This is increased energy requirements will require a significant scale-up and roll-out of renewables. #sustainability #strategy #innovation

Today we announced an important milestone in the development of the Kurmuk Gold Project. Atlantic Lithium Limited (AIM:ALL, OTCQX:ALLIF, ASX:A11) said electricity costs are coming down at its Ewoyaa lithium project in Ghana, thanks to a bulk customer permit that is one of several recent developments in preparation for initial production within two years. The one-year permit from Ghana's Energy Commission allows the company to now bid with bulk energy providers, which is expected to result in a 30-50% overall power cost reduction. Vecco Group's Critical Minerals Project has recently gained 'coordinated project' status, as it moves another step closer to a potential game-changing boost to Queensland's renewable energy sector. The $798 million initiative includes the development of an open-cut mine north of Julia Creek, along with a critical minerals processing plant. Once operational, the project is set to produce vanadium, rare earth elements, and high-purity alumina, all of which are crucial for a rapidly expanding renewable energy sector. Being awarded 'coordinated project' status will enable streamlined environmental approvals from both the Queensland and Australian Governments. This is a great opportunity for North Queensland to expand its critical minerals industry through both mining and manufacturing renewable energy products. Westmount Energy Limited (AIM:WTE, OTCQB:WMELF) told investors that deepwater exploration ‘hotspots’ offshore Guyana and Namibia are well positioned to capture increased industry spending on exploration. Investment in the oil sector’s ‘upstream’ segment is this year projected to reach its highest level since 2015, up to US$528 billion, Westmount said, highlighting estimates from the International Energy Agency (IEA). Nonetheless, the AIM-quoted investor in exploration companies noted that there remains “the risk of underinvestment, relative to what is needed to meet forecast energy demand across a range of 'net zero' demand trajectories”.
