This has to be my hero this week for the Paris Games. Working class, son of a construction worker, fuelled by passion rather than a massive team, he travelled to events to compete in his formative years on the back of donations from friends and family. Arshad Nadeem won the first individual gold for Pakistan with the 6th longest Javelin throw in history. Pushing his friend and rival, Neeraj Chopra, into silver, Arshad actually managed two throws beyond the previous Olympic record. Expect a party in the Punjab when he returns and the movie in due course. Attitude is everything. #pakistan #olympics
Barry Cooper while this is an inspiring story, the bigger heroes are 2 mothers you do not mention in your post. Right after the event, reporters approached Neeraj Chopra’s mom. Neeraj was the reigning Olympic gold medalist from India who had finished second in this tournament. His mom said she was proud of both Neeraj and Arshad, adding that the Pakistani gold medalist was also like her son. Arshad’s mom responded with similar sentiments. From my vantage, the emotions expressed by the winning moms travelled a much greater distance than either athlete’s javelins.
This story of passion and determination is too good to be true! He crossed all the hurdles in his way and defied all the odds. His humble and poor beginning kept him grounded all the way in achieving something very few can in one’s life, and creating a new Olympic record along the way. Story of resilience and humbleness. Good to see your acknowledgment and story here Barry! And yes probably books will be written and movies will be made to keep this story alive for generations. 🥇Arshad Nadeem and 🥈Neeraj Chopra, separated by 450 kilometers and representing different countries, have etched their names in history with their remarkable achievements in javelin throwing.
Barry Cooper I was in front of the TV cheering for the guy as if I knew him. lol. 😂. His story is so inspiring.
It was an awesome throw wasn't it? What I liked most was that it looked so fluid, so natural yet so immensely powerful? Some of his competitors seemed to be throwing from their shoulders but Nadeem seemed to be totally at one with the javelin 😊 Even when he'd thrown 90m+ and won gold, he still went back for another throw just to prove it wasn't a fluke!
I’m sick of reading that he is special because he is ‘working class’. You don’t expect them to achieve because of this
Well done, such an inspiring story. I'd love to see how many Olympics contestants have paid their way from humble beginnings with help from families, friends, communities to get to this point. I think there are many more stories and it would be good to hear them.
His story is certainly movie material. He is a hero back home.
What a story he has Barry!!!! Rallied his village and neighbouring towns to donate and help him prep for the Olympics. Used social media to request people to help him purchase a new javelin. I mean, 😱😱😱 Salute salute !!!!
I believe it was THE longest javelin throw Barry Cooper Arshad secured the Olympic record*** @ 92.97m!
