We have partnered with Plant One CIC re-aligning our commitment to tree planting and the environment around us. Plant One just felt like a really good fit for a partnership, with a core focus on restoring the Celtic rainforest and working with landowners to plan and deliver habitat creation. The benefits are far reaching, with the ability of woodlands to lock up carbon. Our recent team away day included a presentation from Carl Rowlinson, the founder of Plant One. It was a really engaging and powerful presentation, one that had many of our team asking questions. We’ll be joining Carl and his team in Cornwall this year, to plant tree ourselves and learn more about our heritage as a woodland nation. Here’s Carl’s thoughts on why Plant One’s work is so pertinent. “Britain was once a wooded isle, with over 98% of the land covered in trees. But now only 2% of that ancient wildwood survives. Cultural amnesia means we have forgotten our woodland past but we are people of the woods. The UK has lost more than 50% of its biodiversity We are facing the collapse of the living world. This isn't an overinflated headline. David Attenborough said it! And this is a big problem. The abundance of species has declined by 19%. 𝗧𝗼𝗽 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗽𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝗱𝗲𝗰𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲: → 43 per cent of birds → 28 per cent of fungi and lichen → 31 per cent of amphibians and reptiles The decline will continue without some large scale change from the public, private and charitable sectors. Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) is an important step Developers must plan to deliver a BNG of >10% • small sites from April 2024    • national infrastructure projects from late Nov 2025   𝗧𝗵𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗲𝘃𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀: 1. Parks that are valued and maintained are also fundamental to economic growth and vibrant and healthy communities." https://lnkd.in/gCYwhs4e Some big hitting lines in this statement but the one I will focus on is this: "Parks that are valued and maintained are fundamental to economic growth and vibrant and healthy communities." Value and maintenance are entwined with healthy people and economic growth. How does any Park manager prove that they maintain and value any of their Parks? A few proofs are immediate. 1. Signage: This is a Crown Reserve managed by X. 2. Management of any adjoining Crown land use that is known to have degrading impacts on the Park. Film is of N17 that I visited yesterday. N16 and N17 are Mortlake Victoria Lake Reserves. 31.6 and 44.1 ha of Laucustrine ecology - they are both salt lakes. Both managed by Parks Victoria on behalf of the community and the biodiversity of the State of Victoria. I noted that 1 -Signs are entirely absent. 2 - The Crown land around southern part of N16 is a Water Frontage license DEECA that is grazed to the edge of the lake right into the sensitive salt marsh ecology. Value these reserves enough to at least find an extra 2024-25 sliver of budget for two signs and a review of the Water Frontage permit. Steve Dimopoulos #conservation #saltmarsh

- 𝑺𝒆𝒄𝒖𝒓𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑷𝒐𝒕𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒊𝒂𝒍 𝑲𝒂𝒇𝒖𝒆-𝑾𝒆𝒔𝒕 𝑳𝒖𝒏𝒈𝒂 𝑾𝒊𝒍𝒅𝒍𝒊𝒇𝒆 𝑪𝒐𝒓𝒓𝒊𝒅𝒐𝒓 - Early this year I featured in a ZANIS news item after successfully engaging local stakeholders i.e. community members, VAGs, the CRB, and Traditional Leaders on the importance of securing the connectivity between the Kafue National Park and the West Lunga National Park. Through the strong partnership that WWF has with the Department of National Parks (DNPW), the West Lunga Conservation Project (WLCP), and Traditional Authorities, we involved local community institutions and community members to participate in mapping human-wildlife conflict hotspots and wildlife crossing points 🐘🐢🐒🦅🦇to establish active wildlife pathways 🐾 using community knowledge based on their past and current observations. It is important to demonstrate to local communities the value of conservation as a sustainable land-use option in the face of rapid development and high interest in natural resources exploitation. Using data 📝 gathered from the past, we have been able to engage communities and clearly explain what their role is in the conservation of natural resources.
