This is why as police officers our risk assessments are always HIGH or UNKNOWN. Low risk does not exist in policing because something as common as a road traffic collision can turn in to a deadly situation. Not to mention when the attacker is completely unprovoked and seemingly independent to the incident itself. The next time you criticize a police officer from your armchair, consider that these are things we have to deal with on a daily basis. We have families to go home to as well.

This will be my very first post in which I won't be as positive as usual. This video shows exactly why no officer should be on patrol alone. Yet, in this country, officers are even sent on foot patrol alone, even though most are unarmed and don't carry a taser. This is something I find challenging to understand in my transition journey. And I am not alone - when I tell my colleagues in Italy about this, they always struggle to believe it. In Italy, where I served in the Carabinieri police force, all officers were armed, there were no body-worn cameras, and we didn't have an equivalent of the IOPC, nor the same level of scrutiny seen in many common law countries. Nevertheless, our patrols always had a minimum of two officers, sometimes three, which is also the minimum suggested to handle a prisoner safely. In over a decade of service in Italy, I encountered in a period of a month or two the level of violence, disrespect, antagonism, and resistance that I face here in a single set or two. I know I am very new to this reality, and I don't want to criticise a country and my new police family that have given me this opportunity. Eventually, with time, I will understand and see things that I can't see now. I'm always open to changing my mind and broadening my view. However, if there hasn't been evidence-based research on the risks of solo patrols, now is probably the time to undertake it. I believe this culture of solo patrols is a "cultural legacy" that made sense when society was different. If you actually read this short article, someone shoots at troopers during a traffic stop, then they find the car and the person fires at troopers and deputies some more, then they flee in their car and fire more rounds in the neighborhood. When they are finally stopped they fire more rounds at law enforcement, when their violence is finally stopped, and thankfully no bystanders are killed or injured. The headline in the story? “Pierce County deputies fatally shoot person near Spanaway” This is because activist groups scold and pressure the media to use “active voice”. It’s the same mentality behind their preferred phrases “police killings” and “those impacted by the criminal justice system”. It removes responsibility for the behaviors of criminals and suggests the police just decided to go out and kill someone- all the better to demonize law enforcement and create more division. These tactics just serve to further divide and reduce faith in institutions- the media and law enforcement both. Recognize it and see what is being implied. The fact is, heroic troopers and deputies did an extraordinary thing this week and stopped an extremely violent criminal- period.
