Really interesting report from Strada Education Foundation on post #highered opportunity, by state! 📊 Pleasantly surprised to read that a majority of colleges have good *college-to-career data and systems* (but only a few have enhanced wage records to predict post grad outcomes) 👎 Disappointed that only 1/4 students at two-year schools and 1/5 at four-year schools get *education-to-career coaching.* We leave students' coursework, clubs, and careers disconnected at our peril! 💵 Intrigued by their approach to measuring *affordability* -- hours per week at state median wage to cover net cost of attendance. CA and WA most affordable with AL, LI, GA, MT, ND, NH, OH, and PA are least affordable 🏢 Good to see that about half completed an *internship* but wondering about how this is defined since this is 41% according to Gallup (who also showed students who complete them are 1.8x more likely to be engaged at work post grad and 1.5x more likely to think their education was worth the cost). 🚩 Gut punch on *employer alignment* though: No states met Strada's criteria for doing an exemplary job of aligning supply of grads and programs with employer and career demand. Social work students in Georgia and across the United States are struggling with rising education and internship costs. For themselves and others, this impacts their ability to begin, succeed during, and complete their degree programs. They have added their voices to Payment 4 Placements (P4P), a nationwide movement calling for all social work students to be paid for their degree-required internships. Today, there are 47 chapters of Payment for Placements at schools of social work and other colleges, https://lnkd.in/gpcxgYur. In fact, three P4P chapters are in Georgia: P4P at the University of Georgia, P4P at Georgia State University, and P4P at Kennesaw State University. P4P at UGA’s Needs Assessment Survey 2023 found: ·     96% of students do not receive compensation for their field work. ·     90.57% of students reported that unpaid field work has had a negative impact on their mental health. ·     42.59% of students have considered leaving UGA as a result of unpaid field work. ·     78.3% of students have had to work fewer hours at their place of employment as a result of field requirements. A new report from Strada Institute for the Future of Work and The Burning Glass Institute states that a college degree is not always enough to overcome underemployment. One key factor to avoiding underemployment? “The researchers discovered the odds of being underemployed after completing a bachelor’s degree are 49 percent lower for students who participated in an internship during college compared to those who did not, a boost found across all different kinds of institutions and many different majors.” At Genesys Works, participants get practical on-the-job training and professional networks as high school seniors, and they make meaningful contributions as interns. Their experiences prepare them to more comfortably navigate future career interests and internship opportunities with the continued support from GWNYC. Our ultimate goal is for our alumni to land a career trajectory job with a family sustaining wage. Roughly half of college graduates end up in jobs where their degrees aren’t needed, and that underemployment has lasting implications for workers’ earnings and career paths.⁠ ⁠ That is the key finding of a new study tracking the career paths of more than 10 million people who entered the job market over the past decade. It suggests that the number of graduates in jobs that don’t make use of their skills or credentials is greater than previously thought, and underscores the lasting importance of that first job after graduation.⁠ ⁠ Of the graduates in non-college-level jobs a year after leaving college, the vast majority remained underemployed a decade later, according to researchers at labor analytics firm Burning Glass Institute and nonprofit Strada Education Foundation, which analyzed the résumés of workers who graduated between 2012 and 2021. ⁠ ⁠ More than any other factor analyzed—including race, gender and choice of university—what a person studies determines their odds of getting on a college-level career track. Internships are also critical.⁠ ⁠ The findings add fuel to the debate over the value of a college education as its cost has soared—and whether universities are producing the kind of knowledge workers that employers say they need. ⁠

While you’re best bet is garnering an internship in your field, for experience on a resume as well as contacts and skills learned bring in the environment, you can still parlay a temporary or part time survival job into an asset in an interview. After all, everyone needs to work. Having a work ethic speaks volumes when there are enough individuals around who do not want to work or have emotional barriers. You can present your non related to your college major job in such a way that you’ve gained transferable or similar skills necessary for your field. Every job has certain things in common. You need to be organized, flexible, able to prioritize, solve problems and get along with people not matter what field you’re in. Find what you’ve learned on a job and match it to a company’s needs. That’s creative thinking.

Better equipping faculty for career-related advising is a need and growth opportunity for higher ed. At the state level, we tend to focus on career readiness in K-12 but rarely discuss the importance in postsecondary. It is not only relevant but vital as college students consider career options aligned to their majors, seek internships and other experiential learning, and desire labor market information to make informed decisions.
