In the 1980s, Hospice of Western Reserved became the first Ohio hospice with a residential hospice care setting to specialize in caring for AIDS patients facing the end of life. Men are at higher risk for many serious diseases like heart disease, lung cancer, and HIV. Native American and African American men have the lowest life expectancy of any population. The environment where you live, learn, work and play can have a big impact on your health. These are called the Social Determinants of Health and they greatly affect your qualify of life. June is Men’s Health Month! This annual observance, established in 1994, is a time to help educate men and their families about the importance of being proactive about their health by implementing preventive health practices and healthy living decisions. In 2023, the Fiscal Responsibility Act, otherwise known as the “debt ceiling deal,” rescinded unobligated American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funding, including $400 million in disease intervention specialist (DIS) workforce dollars. This job aid has been created to help empower public health professionals with relevant information and strategies that can be safely leveraged to educate policymakers on the importance of funding DIS through state and local mechanisms, including legislation, competitive NOFOs, braiding of funding such as HIV and STD prevention, and exploring other applicable areas within jurisdictions’ health budgets.
