Sustainability Forum Middle East (SFME) is gearing up to launch its second edition from January 8 to 9, 2024 in Bahrain in which over 500 senior decision makers are expected to attend. The Forum, which is a regional platform for engagement, dialogue and skills building in support of climate action, will focus on promoting regional decarbonisation with a focus on “Achieving Net Zero – Pathways to Accelerating Implementation”. Mayor Marvin Rees recently represented Core Cities UK , the Cities Commission for Climate Investment (3Ci), Mayors Migration Council, C40 Cities and the SDG Urban Finance Commission at the 28th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP). Mayor Rees was there as part of the Local Governments and Municipal Authorities (LGMA), which formally represents the voices of cities in the COP process.       Ahead of COP28, the City Office and the Bristol SDG Alliance facilitated a meeting with City Partners, Bristol Advisory Committee on Climate Change (BACC) and the One City Environment Board to input intel and views. The same audience were given the opportunity to hear directly from the Mayor with a video call from Dubai. Exchanging information is extremely valuable as it gives the opportunity for organisations paving the way on climate change, nature recovery, the Just Transition and sustainable development to input to discussions held at COP28.    City-led climate action is key to tackling climate change. #opinion | As the Arab region hosts its second UNFCCC UN Conference of the Parties (COP) in the span of two years (first in Egypt, now in Dubai, United Arab Emirates), critical questions around the facilitation of a just transition linger, and along with it, the possibility of achieving the SDGs overall. For example, the Arab SDG Index; a regional data-rich policy tool tracking the progress of each SDG and its targets for all Arab states, shows that despite poor regional results in achieving the SDGs overall, in some areas there are positive trends relating to clean energy and climate change mitigation. In light of these mixed results, how can the region progress towards a just transition that ensures environmental sustainability, social inclusion, decent work, and poverty eradication, and which priority actions can policymakers in the region take? Malaysia is identified as the second most vulnerable country to #climate risk amongst the 48 largest economies of the world. As the country faces escalating threats posed by climate change, the need for climate #adaptation and #resilience (A&R) strategies to safeguard #Malaysia's future against climate challenges is now more critical than ever. Herein lies a significant obstacle - unlocking adequate finance for A&R in Malaysia. However, last year’s COP28 UAE saw increasing interest and growing collaboration on the A&R agenda, marking new momentum and progress on this front. A week ago, I returned from #COP28 in Dubai. Here are my personal conclusions, which I would like to put up for discussion: 1 The complexity of the problem is immense and underestimated: We can only solve the climate problem if we talk to each other much more to understand the extreme complexity and interdisciplinarity of this issue. The COPs are therefore definitely helpful - even if they obviously only lead to small steps towards reducing the immense climate problems. 2 I understood: No climate mitigation without climate justice. Unfortunately, what constitutes climate justice is difficult to define and is subject to individual political interests. It is essential that we approach this challenge with pragmatism, otherwise we will have endless discussions that will prevent us from tackling the central problem of climate mitigation. 3 My somewhat frightening conclusion: Without mitigation, we all lose. For me, however, climate mitigation received far too little attention at COP28 compared to climate adaptation and climate justice. And without climate mitigation, there will be no climate justice in the long run. These are my personal conclusions. Which ones did I miss, which ones do you have?
