Donella Meadows was a visionary in systems thinking. One of the biggest challenges companies face in getting their employees to return to the office is that the most powerful levers in our work system have changed. Meadows outlines 12 such levers in her essential book, "Thinking in Systems." Many companies are applying levers with the least significant effect by focusing on individual incentives or pressures while ignoring the fact that work and life have undergone a reset of values and expectations. This reset will soon develop into new norms. Companies must develop a rich ecosystem of office life to attract employees back to the office. However, they need to see the mission as more like reforestation after a mass disaster than flipping a switch and issuing edicts. To attract more people back to the workplace, companies must influence the new prevailing paradigms about work. They must reimagine their organization’s goals to value and support human connection and collaboration. Furthermore, they must empower employees with greater abilities to self-organize in the office than out of the office. Leadership must decide whether to view the challenge as a simple strategic initiative or recognize that they are dealing with a complex system that has developed new connections and interdependencies. I had an engaging dialogue with Lindsay Kohler, where we delved into Deloitte's 2024 Global Human Capital Trends report to discuss how organizations should evolve to thrive in the boundaryless world of work. The real strength of culture lies not in a one-size-fits-all approach but in nurturing distinct #microcultures that are better tailored to the teams working within the organization. Those who embrace microcultures are more likely to achieve positive business and human outcomes. The third annual EY Future Workplace Index, a national research survey of C-suite corporate leaders conducted by Ernst & Young LLP (EY US), offers an eye-opening window into the ongoing evolution of the workplace and real estate during the past year. “What we are seeing is a balancing out among corporate leaders regarding how they view and measure employee productivity,” says Mark Grinis, EY Americas Real Estate, Hospitality & Construction Leader. “Most can’t point to specific evidence of decreased productivity in a remote work environment. It's easier to say that it's important for people to be onsite for the sake of maintaining culture than it is to tell your people that you don't trust them. "Trust helps with retention, productivity, and well-being," says Arthur Mazor, Global Human Capital Practice Leader at Deloitte when I chatted with him about Deloitte's 2024 Human Capital Trends report. "People in high trust companies are 50% less likely to leave, 180% more likely to be motivated, and 140% more likely to take on extra responsibilities."
