AI seems to be facing a slow-motion crisis. Whether it’s Gemini’s weirdness, or the increasing restrictions being placed on ChatGPT, there’s a broadening credibility gap. This credibility gap isn’t an aspect of the tech - it’s a reflection of creators that are addicted to the power and profit of central control. Whether it’s the web, social media, AI, or any other information collector - that credibility gap will settle in so long as the builders and operators of the tech don’t grow past this. We’ve seen this vividly across all our channels. It’s not about the particular beliefs of individual operators (be it Jack Dorsey or Elon Musk) - it’s about not trying to make peoples’ information consumption decisions for them. Hopefully this crisis will bring us more quickly off the AI hype mountain. Getting beyond cheap entertainment or novelty, and on to the plateau of usefulness will require freeing the tech and more importantly freeing its users to decide how they want to use it.

There's a really dark side to LLMs and content moderation that big tech companies don't want you to know about. As someone who uses AI tools daily, I'm doing my best to educate myself and learn from thoughtful humans like Britney Muller who are on a mission to support a considered approach to the future of LLMs. I watched “Cleaners”, a documentary about the people who have to look at the most gruesome and awful content to label them so they never make it into social platforms. The best known AI company used Kenyan workers at less than $2/h to make their model less toxic. I asked Britney on Humans of Martech, what steps can the tech industry take to ethically manage and support content moderators who are exposed to harmful material? Should there be an industry-wide standard for the treatment and support of content moderators?

From a newsletter yesterday, in the same issue: AI to Enable a One-Person Billion Dollar Company and ChatGPT goes temporarily “insane” with unexpected outputs, spooking users The irony obviously eluded the editor. The one-billion one-person company refers to a bet among Sam Altman's tech CEO friends about when the first such company occurs, not if. According to Altman, the 10-person one-billion company is just around the corner. This reminds me of a fad that occurred in the eighties, which claimed that the management of multinational corporations could be outsourced to part-time CEOs, or in modern jargon "fractional" CEOs. It took hold of such business luminaries as the Saatchi advertising brothers. No prize for guessing where this idea went. It seems the AI hype machine is itself going bonkers. But when a venture needs to make bigger and bigger promises and throw bigger and bigger numbers around to keep people interested (see Altman's 7 trillion dollar investment ask), that suggests desperation and a fundamentally flawed concept to me.
