This week marks the commencement of my pre-law internship with Burr & Forman, and I could not be more excited! I am eager to learn more about legal practice while refining my legal research and writing skills over the summer. #BurrPreLaw2024

One tip for current law students. Get practical experience while in law school. This includes hands on programs or courses and definitely internships. A surprising amount of people have only worked at 1 or 0 law firms by the time they finish law school. They can of course still be very successful, but doing an internship helps learn how to practice law, what practice areas you like, and it looks great because it's work experience.

Last Friday marked the end of my summer internship with the Midland County Prosecuting Attorney's Office, and I already miss it. Here are some of the things I got to do as a summer intern, on the record: 1) Arraignments (probation violation, bond violation, and initial) 2) Pretrials 3) Settlement Conferences 4) Probation Violation Hearings 5) Review hearings (probate) 6) A Jury Trial - yes, a jury trial as first chair. This includes anything and everything trial, like jury instructions, voir dire, opening/closing statements, direct/cross exams... everything. Things moved much faster than I thought they would. 7) Legal research on various criminal issues, like double jeopardy issues that arise when charging multiple assaultive counts against one defendant. I cannot stress enough the amount of experience I gained this past summer. For those that are looking to get the most bang for your buck out of your internship, public offices are such a great avenue. Lastly, A huge thank you to J Dee Brooks and the rest of the Midland County Prosecuting Attorney's Office. The support staff are amazing, and the attorneys gave me the autonomy I needed so that I felt I was learning on my own.
