A UN synthesis report which provides a scientific and technical base for the conclusion of the first Global Stocktake at the upcoming COP28 reports that we need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 22 gigatons by 2030 if we are to keep a global temperature rise of 1.5C within reach. (Read the report: https://lnkd.in/dM72cAnz)   Commenting on the report, Simon Stiell, Executive Secretary of UN Climate Change, said the world is “not on track towards achieving the long-term goals of the Paris Agreement,” and that there is a “rapidly closing window of opportunity to secure a livable and sustainable future.”   At Atoco, we share the UN’s sense of urgency. We believe that to keep the temperature in check, we not only need to reduce future emissions of CO₂, but also those emissions that have already taken place. That’s why we have developed carbon capture solutions based on novel reticular materials. Highly scalable, efficient and resilient, these solutions are poised to play a key role in capturing carbon dioxide in both Post-Combustion Capture (PCC) and Direct Air Capture (DAC) settings.

Reduction in emissions alone is not sufficient! Carbon capture needs to quadruple by 2050 to meet climate targets. According to a recent report from the University of Oxford, the world needs to remove CO2  around 7–9 billion tonnes per year by mid-century from the atmosphere, to meet the 1.5°C Paris Agreement target. The report highlights the importance of both reducing emissions and removing CO2 from the atmosphere to achieve climate goals. Currently just 2 billion tons per year are being removed by Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR), mostly through conventional methods like tree planting. Forestation, which accounts for 99% carbon removal, could lead to conflicts over land use for agriculture and biofuels production. The world needs to invest in new carbon capture technologies. Novel CDR methods, like biochar, enhanced rock weathering, direct air carbon capture and storage (DACCS) and bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS), contribute only 1.3 million tonnes annually. While investment in CDR research and start-ups is going to an increasing variety of novel methods, few of these methods are currently targeted in government policies and proposals to scale CDR, which accounts for just 1.1% of investment in climate-tech start-ups.  #decarbonization, #carbon capture, #Climate Goals, #Carbon Removal https://lnkd.in/gX9dErqW

Towards an ambitious Industrial Carbon Management in the EU The scale of this challenge requires an EU-wide industrial carbon management strategy, which will be based on three pathways: • Capturing CO2 for storage (CCS): where CO2 emissions of fossil, biogenic or atmospheric origin are captured and transported for permanent and safe geological storage. • Removing CO2 from the atmosphere: where permanent storage involves biogenic or atmospheric CO2 and it will result in removing carbon from the atmosphere. • Capturing CO2 for utilisation (CCU): where industry uses captured CO2 in synthetic products, chemicals or fuels. Whilst initially using all types of CO2, over time a strategic focus of utilisation value chains on capturing biogenic or atmospheric CO2 will yield higher climate benefits. The "Production Gap Report 2023" was just published by SEI — Stockholm Environment Institute, Climate Analytics, E3G, the International Institute for Sustainable Development, and the UN Environment Programme. The sad-but-expected takeaway from this report is that "governments, in aggregate, still plan to produce more than double the amount of fossil fuels in 2030 than what would be consistent with limiting global warming to 1.5°C". This report profiles 20 fossil fuel-producing nations which were the combined source of 84% of CO2 emissions in 2021. Their current production plans will produce 69% more fossil fuels than is compatible with the riskier 2°C target. Of these 20 nations, 17 had pledged to achieve net zero emissions: so much for critical plans needed to avoid an existential threat. As I wait for the world-wide launch event to begin in ~30 minutes (join it at https://lnkd.in/guiUsRRC), I remembered this exceptional time-lapse video from the NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration that graphically depicts the history of atmospheric CO2, from 800,000 years ago to January 2022. It is so depressing: the science and data clearly show the path we are on, and we know what we must do to stop it, but we cannot seem to help ourselves...

At the EU side event on carbon removal, national and international CDR voices had a very similar message - any country that has set a net zero target must deploy carbon removal, and it must be scaled prudently with a robust framework so that we can learn by doing. 💪 🌱 At COP, our Chief Science Officer and co-founder Eli Mitchell-Larson moderated a panel examining the current state of CDR deployment and how to move forward in NDCs. This international panel made some crucial points about how to develop CDR: Oliver Geden (Vice-chair IPCC WGIII) – If you already have set a net zero target, you’ve implicitly already said yes to carbon dioxide removal because otherwise it would not be a net zero target but a zero emissions target.” Kurt Vandenberghe (Director-General - DG ClimateAction) - We need to be prudently rapid about how to [scale CDR] with the highest possible integrity, because we will need these technologies and business operations in the future, but we cannot afford to go very quickly at the risk that it backfires later on. MRV is the cornerstone [to that]. Annie Hills (Senior Adviser to the US Special Envoy for Climate) – “what we have to do is to make some smart bets and start actually scaling things up and putting money on the ground and seeing what can happen.” Gideon Henderson (Chief Scientific Adviser and Director General for Science and Analysis at DEFRA) – We need to learn by doing. The fact that we've got companies deploying at scale is an opportunity to learn from those deployments and get data so we can think about how we can mobilise some of that data make sure it's open and shared and brought into our regulatory and accounting systems. Helen Bray (Vice-president of Policy for Puro.earth) - What our suppliers are looking for is clarity from governments in terms of the target setting. Then, there needs to be investable policy framework so they can make that business case for investment and that might be very different depending on the type of durable carbon dioxide removal that you're doing. It is important to know what CDR stands for .. and why is it important .. as we progress with the initiative.

"Monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV) forms the foundation of any framework governing the performance of Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) activities. An MRV framework for quantifying CDR may be conceptually simple, but the practical reality is complex. The tools, instruments and protocols used to measure removals vary significantly for different CDR methods across jurisdictions and between entities operating within voluntary carbon markets." GRI researchers Josh Burke FRSA and Leo Mercer have contributed to a leading global scientific assessment of the State of Carbon Dioxide Removal. Their chapter explores MRV of CDR and its importance to build trust and transparency for market scaling.
