📊 Did you know that women and girls with disabilities make up 16% of all women in the United States of America? There’s more to the story: looking at data from 2020, 36% of LGBTQIA+ adults and 52% of transgender adults in the United States identified themselves as having a disability. ✨ This week, we're in Geneva, Switzerland, supporting Valerie Novack from the United States Gender and Disability Justice Alliance during the Human Rights Committee (HRC) review! 🌎 Our submission to the UN Human Rights Committee, in collaboration with the United States Gender and Disability Justice Alliance, the Autistic Women & Nonbinary Network, and the Autistic People of Color Fund, focuses on the unique challenges faced at the intersection of gender and disability in the U.S. By taking our concerns to the UN Human rights Committee as they review the United States’ compliance of the International Covenant of Civil and Political Rights, we're advocating for change and suggesting concrete steps, such as adopting of comprehensive federal legislation and endorsing international conventions. 📜 🤔 But why does this submission matter? Because it's our opportunity to ensure that the experiences of women and gender-diverse people with disabilities in the United States will not be ignored and will be brought to the State's attention during this important review. 💜 By submitting this report to the United Nations and showing up in person at the United Nations, we're declaring that our stories deserve to be at the forefront of discussions about human rights. What does the Equality (Race and Disability) Bill mean to you? The #Equality (#Race and #Disability) #Bill is more targeted, directly addressing issues of disability and race pay gaps. There has been much focus on the #gender pay gap in recent years. It still exists (7.7%), but over ten years, the Office for National Statistics (ONS) reports that it has closed by 25% to April 2023. This new bill is intended to close these other pay gaps. "Gender and disability are two key issues that for a long period, have been promoted separately by disability and feminist advocates. However, women with disabilities face discrimination based on being women, and also their disability. How do we ensure that all disability rights work fully includes women, and advances their rights? This guidance can be used as a mean to support the mainstreaming of the rights of women and girls with disabilities in all EDF’s work.
