It's been 214 days since I was laid off suddenly from a job that I loved. 214 days of dreaming about what the future holds. 214 days without the team and organization I believed in. 214 days of scouring job boards, hopefully applying and often being met with radio silence. 214 days of DMs reaching out for feedback and insight, often leading to no replies and getting left on read. 214 days of checking portals to find that applications are still in an endless cycle of "review". There are days where it feels like I'm throwing CVs into a black hole, and when you do get a reply, it's usually a canned robo-response. "We decided to move forward with other candidates." "We wish you the best in your search." "We know this isn't the news you wanted to hear." This is a gentle reminder that there are hundreds of incredibly talented people in your network quietly looking for work in a job market that is wilder than any I've ever seen before. It's also a sober call to remember that in tech, or any industry for that matter, layoffs can happen to anyone. Don't take good work for granted. Tell your teammates you're thankful for them, and in all that you do strive to remain grateful - even when things get boring. Good work is a gift, truly. Take time to reach out to your friends who are looking for their next gig. Ask how they're doing. Check up on their mental health. Send articles and leads. And memes. Meet up for coffee, and if they ask for help do the best you can to point them in the right direction. It takes a village, and after all, we're all in this together. 🙏

Here is this one employer who loves you. Checking your portals and activities 214 times a day. That would decide to move forward if you join. He has the news you want to hear. Maybe that’s Intraprenör maybe it hasn’t found you yet - keep going and share your journey 🫶 I will share that with my german followers 🇩🇪 because there is an important message in here for me as an employer: It’s never an employer or employee market. In Germany, employees can choose and ask for any demands in application processes just because we make them believe they have all the choices on their side due to workforce shortage. But turnover rates are at a maximum, retention is weak. There are no winners, just losers in this game right now. Its a matter of time technological progress will also bring lay-offs to our markets and another generation job opportunities and profiles we can‘t yet imagine. We will never be the employer paying the most, pampering the best, growing the most. Therefore, we should care better on an individual level, allowing flexibility to make work and life work alongside an ever-changing lifespan of gigs.

It feels like you took those words right out of my mind, that's the way I've been thinking lately. I haven't been laid off for that long. But I have filled out more applications for all different kinds of jobs that i can't even remember what the jobs were even for and I keep getting the same results over and over again. But all i can do is stay positive and be patient. Because someone out there is looking for the kind of skill set i have. I just hope it comes soon

I wish more people realized we're all in this "life" thing together. I just don't think that's the case.

I was in the same boat for almost 4 years. I stopped looking because it was too disheartening (I’m twice+ your age), and I was needed more at home anyway. But regardless, it does a number on your sense of self. I applaud you, and hope the perfect thing finds you when you most need it.

Thanks Benjamin Riddle for sharing your experience, and I love the reminder in this, nothing is stable. I'm curious if you'd be willing to put down what you are looking for at this stage in your life. Or what you are specifically not looking for? I'm always happy to keep my eyes and ears open, yet it's much easier with a few pointers.

I feel you, Benjamin. I've been laid of twice in less than 6 months. It's a grind everyday and I've lost count of the number of applications I've submitted but I haven't lost hope. I try to reach out to others to provide support and just simple encouragement and conversation. We are all in this together and must lift each other up.
