very interesting conversation today with an industry leader about DEI and potential naval-gazing happening right now. Especially around industry events. This has me thinking, are we doing enough to create tangible actions to empower change? Further to this, how are we holding ourselves to account to ensure that underrepresented groups are being heard, and given the same opportunities as others? I have said this on stage, and I have said it in meetings. In 10-15 years time, 25-35% of todays industry will have likely retired. What are we doing to ensure that we have the security leaders of tomorrow in post, and how are we targeting underrepresented groups ... outside of nice PowerPoints and empowering speeches at events? Simeon Quarrie Jane Frankland Steve Cottrell Chris Dunning-Walton Rachel Gentry thoughts as always, welcomed.
Completely agree, Ben. Anecdotally, I have a family friend who lives with autism who just graduated in cyber security and is looking for his first job. He is desperate for an employer to give him an opportunity with some reasonable adjustments, but is hitting dead ends in every avenue. Disappointing from an industry that talks so much about neurodiversity - we need to see real change from employers 😔
Oh Benjamin Craig CISMP you should definitely have a chat with Victoria Dale DEI - her approach is all about real, practical steps we can all take. It would be great to have a virtual chat with a group of like minded people to come up with some concrete plans
We’re not doing enough! Succession planning is incredibly poor in most organisations, we continue to see leadership teams lacking diversity, and what’s worse is that in times of financial difficulties, organisations take the step off the gas . This in itself goes to show that language is performative rather than action backed for a lot of organisations. It’s SO short sighted
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I’m really interested in this too.
Well said Benjamin! Too much to say on this subject to do it justice in a comment. Time for a coffee I think?! 😉
Sadly ‘Training your replacement’ is something that strikes fear into many. It should be the biggest compliment to any leader 😊
