Exciting news to share! We recently demonstrated a groundbreaking application developed in collaboration with University of Nicosia for a PhD project. This project focuses on the critical role of psychology in the rehabilitation of women—true heroes—who have triumphed over breast cancer. The application isn't just another tech innovation; it's a testament to the fusion of technology and compassion. It strives to redefine how we approach the rehabilitation process, leveraging the profound insights from psychology to empower and uplift those who've overcome immense challenges. The collaboration with UNIC has been invaluable, combining academic rigor with real-world impact. As we navigate the complexities of psychology in the context of breast cancer survival, our aim is not just technological advancement, but a genuine enhancement of lives. These women, our heroes, deserve nothing less than the best. Exciting news! Our team has published a new study in Alzheimer's Research & Therapy, introducing an innovative method to measure morphological similarity and randomness in Alzheimer's disease patients. Using the information-based similarity index, originally developed for analyzing symbolic sequences and textual authorship, our research has shed light on how specific brain regions alter their micro-structural patterns and morphological relationships in Alzheimer's Disease. Our study utilized T1-weighted MRI images from 342 cognitively normal participants and 276 Alzheimer’s patients, revealing significant pattern changes and shifts in structural organization that correlated with cognitive performance metrics. NEWS: Construction Underway for Michigan State University + Henry Ford Health Biomedical Research Center -- Michigan State University (MSU) and Henry Ford Health have joined forces to construct the $335 million Henry Ford Health + Michigan State University Research Center, which will house 84 principal investigators and their research teams focused on cancer, neuroscience, infectious diseases, immunology, and public health. The first floor will accommodate a large core lab including an imaging suite. An entire floor will be dedicated to the Nick Gilbert Neurofibromatosis Research Institute. At 335,000 sf and seven stories, it will be will be MSU’s largest research facility. As part of a 30-year partnership begun in 2021, the center will be owned by MSU on land leased from Henry Ford Health, and operated jointly by both institutions. The venture is part of a $3 billion development group that includes the Detroit Pistons basketball organization. The “Future of Health” project will feature a new hospital tower and 600 units of mixed-income housing. I'm elated and grateful to announce that after 8 months of back and forth, one major as well as minor revision, our manuscript titled "Disparity in treatment receipt by race and treatment guideline revision years for stage 1A Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer patients in the United states" has found its right place to be published in (high impact factor) journal. I must admit that the process isn't easy (kudos to those #scientists who strive to bring evidence for real world applicability through publication), but it becomes as light as a feather when your #reviewers provide constructive feedback understanding the #importance and #novelty of work you do. The paper is one of my #thesis work and I've always #advocated for #lungcancer #survival outcomes in presence of #airpollution #climatechange as it hits home (hence it kept me motivated to bring it to this stage, needless to say almost 4 years of tiresome research even before sending it for publication). However for someone outside the expertise, one might think "we already have lot of work done, what's the need?". #publications like these serve as an #evidence for upcoming #oncology #guideline #revisions where even a seemingly minor contribution makes a significant difference in terms of #saving #lives especially when #complex #geography and inherent #data limitations at #national scale is involved. #innovation fact: I'm the first to account for treatment guideline revision years for the longest study period (29 years), as well as developing a #study #design in which we generate proxy variables to determine close to #true #causal #relationships . Why it matters? Observational data itself brings the inherent #validity threat which can be mitigated by #sophisticated #statistical and #empirical #modeling. Keep an eye for, when the study is published!

This week, May 12-18, is National Women's Health Week! Biomolecular chemist Claudia Maier, alongside a multidisciplinary team including researchers from College of Engineering – Oregon State University and Oregon State University College of Agricultural Sciences, are using a Research and Innovation Seed (SciRIS) Program grant from the College of Science to study triple-negative #breastcancer. The researchers are working on a technique called single-cell proteomics, allowing them to study differences in cellular characteristics at an individual cell level. It will impact what we know about disease progression, outcomes and treatment. The team was made possible through SciRIS funding of collaborative research! This collaborative aspect of breast cancer research is so important as the knowledge of it is limited if considered from just one field.
