SRIS@10 What are 3 ingredients for building a world class research institute in 10 years? 1. Find an area that is truly differentiated and fully stand behind it despite what the sceptics and nay-sayers say. It wasn’t easy to make a case for “skin”, when reviewers and funders saw cancer, heart disease, neuroscience, as “more important”. 2. Find the right partners and put some of our best people on it. SRIS was the first tripartite institute to be jointly set up by A*STAR, NHG and NTU. It had its teething pains, ups & downs, but is now a model of what research partnership should look like. Today, it is led by a scientist, has a chief dermatologist, a chief engineer, and a robust pipeline of smart young people from different backgrounds. 3. Never lose sight of translation, whether this is into the clinic, company, or community. This keeps projects grounded in the real world. SRIS has changed clinical practice, introduced first-in-man innovations, saved limbs (literally), and developed products that have reached millions globally. I’m privileged to have been a part of this journey, right from its inception on a deck of PowerPoint slides! Happy 10th!

The biggest bottleneck is talent. There is not enough to go around everywhere but particularly so in smaller countries. How you deal with it determines success and failure. There are only two ways, which of course can be combined. Good luck.

Congratulations Ben and BMRC for the vision . I never will forget the day you shared the vision for SRIS in 2012 and asked what i could do for skin research . I was hooked when I met Birgit and Steven Thng and rest was history 😃
