AON NFP MERGER NOTE I am going to make this joke one more time to fight my urge to add it to every post about the potential NFP Aon merger, the NFP folks better go out and get their Manchester United jerseys! I have experienced NFP having an impenetrable hold on a trophy account I wanted, and I have a very good friend who recently joined AON and has nothing but great things to say about the group. MY TAKE ON THE LEVELS OF INSURANCE BROKERAGES I always feel like there are the Program and Captive building whales paid on consulting at the top, and people selling "like" off-the-shelf products at the bottom of the stack. Building niches and programs seems to be the breakout / level-up. In the middle brokerages (Middle Market) have great teams and pay for tech and tools to help lock in / keep accounts. You never know what account will break you loose, or what idea will be your "secret" as Peter Theil would say. (Then you shut up and run with it!) I think it's so key to stay in the game, watch the big players, and tend your own garden. BROKER BREWS NOTE FOR TONIGHT I am excited for tonight's hang with the #BrokerBrews folks! I still remember many years ago when a banker explained to me what an MGA was. That MGA was acquired by a private equity firm and has become one of the big titans in the space. At the time, it felt like a very niche, obscure market. Fast forward some 10 years and MGAs now make up 9% of the P&C industry - we're talking a roughly $90bn market - and are a darling of the PE world. But growth is slowing down and the market is still bifurcated with a small number of players at the top having the lion's share of the market, and an array of small companies fighting for the rest (with new ones popping up everyday).
