Think of The Gambia and images of white sandy beaches and tropical sun spring to mind 🏝️ But the reality is different. It’s also a country facing extreme poverty. Poor sanitation and malnutrition mean the problem is increasing. Behind the glamourous hotels are homes surrounded by waste. Disease is common. Adult literacy is low. And children are making decisions between going to school or working to take care of their families. In fact 19% of children aged between 7 and 12 are not in school. The situation is only getting worse with the cost of living crisis. The Oasis Project has been supporting the people of Bakau since 2006. I’m proud to have recently joined the team as a Trustee and Starlight school is our flagship project. We’re raising money to create a purpose-built school in Bakau to ensure more children benefit from high quality nursery and primary education. We’re the only not-for-profit school in the area - set up to support those most in need - and have so far supported 1614 children. We want to support at least 300 students each year - a 50% increase on current capacity. Our redevelopment project is underway and we have big hopes and dreams to make this as well-resourced as possible so that we can support many more children to learn and grow. We are undertaking the work in stages to ensure the school is sustainable. The current buildings are not fit for purpose - the classrooms are small and there are only 4 toilets for 200 people. Phase one is to construct a new toilet block then we’ll plan to develop the classrooms, kitchen, canteen, and provide computers and facilities for wider community engagement too. Our mission to make school fun for over 160 children across four schools is falling short, and frankly, it's disheartening. Despite our tireless efforts, our fundraising struggles persist. After 3 months, we've scraped together €570 (420 online, 150 offline), but we're a long way off from our €2000 target, a figure we need to support our local communities for the whole of 2024. The reality is stark. Without adequate resources, these children face a deprived educational experience. The absence of sports equipment, unsafe play spaces, and limited access to games hinder their growth and joy in learning. This is precisely where every raised cent will make a profound impact. YETIPAUL FOUNDATION - CHILDREN'S DAY 2024 Children are the cornerstone of a society's future. Their well-being directly impacts the social, economic, and cultural health of the community. By investing in children, societies invest in their own continued prosperity and development. Recognizing the vital role children play, the YETIPAUL FOUNDATION is dedicated to improving the quality of life for children through various activities and interventions. In February 2024, we successfully commissioned a solar-powered borehole, benefiting both the children and the broader community. We are also constructing a new toilet facility, set to be completed by June 2024. To honor Children's Day, we will be visiting the students of Oke-Ita Methodist Nursery and Primary School on May 28, 2024. The event will feature various activities designed to encourage fresh perspectives and ideas among children. We believe that fostering creativity and critical thinking can lead to progress and development in various fields. We encourage student volunteers to submit a write-up about their school. Every year, YETIPAUL FOUNDATION is committed to creating a better learning environment and experiences for children living in underprivileged communities. Our Next Challenge: This summer, we are starting a vital refurbishment project for Oke-Ita Nursery and Primary School in Ago-Iwoye, Ogun State. This school needs urgent attention, and we will be tackling it in stages due to the project's scale and funding needs: Phase 1: Removing the existing roof and other worn structures Phase 2: Replacing the ceiling and roofing Phase 3: Renovating the classrooms Phase 4: Repainting the school building Phase 5: Providing new furniture and school equipment The total cost of the project is estimated at N20 million (£15,000). Studies show that students with a bachelor’s degree earn an average of $1 million more over their lifetime than students with just a high school diploma. In fact, a bachelor’s degree is required for more than 40% of jobs, yet millions of children around the world, including thousands in our own cities, never finish or even make it to high school. Article 26 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights has declared education a basic human right, yet in sub-Saharan Africa, one-fifth of children between the ages of 6 and 11, one-third of youth between the ages of 12 and 14, and 60% of youth between the ages of 15 and 17 are not in school. In Nashville, Tennessee, less than 15% of students can demonstrate grade-level literacy at schools where 90% of students are low-income (Nashville Propel MNPS Report Card). But every day, many nonprofit organizations work tirelessly to change the narrative. So far, in partnership with phenomenal organizations—such as Develop Africa, Backfield in Motion, Build a School in Africa, and Kids Empowered by Your Support—Ubuntu For Humanity has been able to help build schools in Sierra Leone and Mali, donate renewable solar lights in rural sub-Saharan Africa, and sponsor the education of youths worldwide. As a proud partner of St Gabriel’s I am proud to tell you about one of their success stories from 2023.   Movement for Change    In August this year, St Gabriel’s School in Sydney Australia launched its new social impact initiative, Movement for Change. As a school for children with special needs, St Gabriel’s core focus is enriching the lives of its students and enabling them the same opportunities afforded everyone their age, in school and in the community. From K-12, their programs cover social skills, life skills, financial literacy and vocational education and training.    The school’s mission is to make a difference in the lives of its students and to do that the school knows that they also need to make a difference in the world they live in. Did you know, almost 1 in 10 Australians with disability have experienced discrimination because of their disability. Sadly, 4 out of every 5 children with a disability attending school have faced an educational restriction. And nearly half of all employed people with disability reported that they had experienced unfair treatment from their employer due to their disability in the past 12 months.    So, what is Movement for Change? It's getting active - physically and socially! The campaign is focused on inclusion and changing the way people see and treat disabilities.   St Gabriel’s students and families, as well as other local schools took part in Movement for Change this year. Some people set goals of a weekly fitness class for the month, a set amount of kilometres or steps per day, a school walkathon, or an activities afternoon. They got active and spread the word about why they were doing it, and many also raised money for the school at the same time. The funds raised from Movement for Change go towards programs like work education and social skills which help bridge gaps for the St Gabriel’s students. Ruby Bridges is often remembered as a little girl, from a black and white photo, escorted to elementary school by US Marshalls. That photo was taken on November 14, 1960. But today Bridges is 69 years old, reminding us that the fight for civil rights was not too long ago—and it still on going. Access to education is one of the largest barriers those in historically underserved communities face today. Research consistently shows that children from low-income families are at higher risk of lower academic achievement, with girls facing unique challenges at the intersection of gender and poverty. Studies reveal that girls from impoverished backgrounds may experience increased stress, limited resources, and inadequate support systems, leading to decreased educational attainment.
