Excited to share that I've recently completed the course "The Effect of Fires on People, Property and the Environment" from the University of Maryland, College Park! Key Takeaways: 1- Human Impact: Delved deep into the physiological and psychological effects of fires on individuals. 2- Property Assessment: Learned about the extensive damage fires can inflict on structures, from weakening foundations to the hidden dangers of smoke damage. 3- Environmental Repercussions: Explored the larger-scale implications of fires on our environment. Beyond the visible scarring of land, fires can disrupt ecosystems, contribute to climate change, and reduce air quality, affecting communities far removed from the immediate blaze. This course has been eye-opening and has deepened my understanding of the comprehensive impact of fires. I believe that this knowledge is crucial, not just for professionals in the fire safety and environmental sectors, but for anyone looking to build a holistic understanding of our environment and community safety. I'm eager to apply this newfound knowledge in my professional endeavors and would highly recommend this course to anyone interested in fire safety, environmental studies, or community planning. Let's continue to learn and strive for a safer, more resilient future! #firesafety #environment #lifelonglearning #fireprotection

In this issue, all things CRB: the confusing, the bad, and some tough western water history. We’ve all seen the plethora of CRB stories the past few months, with headlines ranging from “Water Cuts from Arizona, other states to help Colorado River” to “Federal government’s short-term Colorado River stabilization plan paints a rosy picture” to “New federal plan aims to ensure Colorado River’s sustainability through 2026.” Where does the all-elusive ‘truth’ lie? Our take: The 2022-23 wet winter saved our posteriors, giving Reclamation breathing room to figure out the 2026 Interim Guidelines. Beyond that, look at the science – as Brad Udall notes, “every trend is moving in the wrong direction.”

Communities with limited resources can struggle to prioritize, plan, and implement solutions that reduce their risk to hazards. For such communities, the capacity to implement strong mitigation plans can be out of reach due to financial shortages, lack of people power, and a dearth of skills and technical expertise. This webinar from the Natural Hazard Center will discuss how researchers at the University of Oklahoma have engaged local planners, emergency managers, and other decision-makers from communities in Arkansas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, and Texas to improve mitigation outcomes and build mitigation capacity.
