Healthcare Anchor Network (HAN) member systems BJC HealthCare and SSM Health in St. Louis, MO and anchor collaborative West Side United in Chicago, IL have helped to bring place-based economic development and jobs to their cities. BJC HealthCare and SSM Health formed a joint venture, St. Louis Healthcare Support Services, LLC, to build and operate a regional laundry facility that will better meet the health systems’ needs and will clean 35 million pounds of the health systems’ linens each year. Initially, the joint venture will look to hire 80 community members from underserved areas for these good paying jobs with benefits. From the Fierce Healthcare article: “We often say ‘good healthcare starts with a job,’” [Tom] Hervieux, [BJC’s vice president and chief supply officer], said, “and creating economic development in the community and reinvesting with our purchasing and hiring dollars really make St. Louis and our larger community a better place to be.” “Because being that we're anchored here, and we live here, we want to continue to be good stewards and good neighbors,” said [Michael Gray, System Vice President and Chief Supply Chain Officer, SSM Health]. West Side United (WSU) is an anchor collaborative on Chicago's west side whose members include HAN members RUSH University, Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago and Ascension WSU is partnering with several organizations in Chicago, including the Steans Family Foundation, to establish Fillmore Linen Service, a local healthcare laundry linen service entity for hospitals to shift their business to and as a model to create meaningful local jobs. Fillmore Linen Service will create 175+ living-wage jobs with advancing skill levels for rising incomes. The linen laundry will handle 62 million pounds of laundry annually. As the Employer and Community Engagement lead for the Fillmore Economic Development initiative, WSU will provide strategic direction and operational oversight, providing long-term recruitment and retention planning for North Lawndale and surrounding West Side communities in partnership with Skills for Chicagoland's Future, North Lawndale Employment Network (NLEN), and others. From the Steans Family Foundation article: After a completion period, the Fillmore Center will be placed into a Community Benefit Trust by the Steans Family Foundation. This will allow local residents to share in and control profits from the building. Today my heart is with my Hawkes Bay Healthcare whānau on the first anniversary of Cyclone Gabrielle. While the physical scars of this event are healing, the mental and emotional scars will remain 🖤🤍 It’s still surreal to think that we woke in Napier that morning thinking we had escaped the worst of it. The power and internet lasted just long enough to see some initial headlines and get the message not to attempt to travel to Hastings. I made my way to Napier Health Centre, genuinely thinking we would just be passing time until the road opened and we could get to work in Hastings. I had no idea of the devastation that was unfolding across the region. As the news spread it was a relief to have many senior leaders on the Napier side and the CIMS structure was quickly activated. The next few days were a blur. In the midst of unfolding chaos, concern for family and friends, no access to petrol, no electricity, no phones, healthcare staff did what they always do, they showed up. I joined with a group of colleagues to help deploy staff to where they were needed. I was blown away as staff who had never met, let alone worked together, teamed up to do work they had never done before. Without a second thought people took on a variety of roles and worked through complex challenges. How to support vulnerable people in the community who didn’t have access to their usual carers or essentials? How to deliver care to older and vulnerable people in evacuation centres? How to get essential supplies delivered from Hastings and out to those in the community? How to discharge people who had no homes to be discharged to? Rosters were developed. Natural leaders stood up and pulled teams together, giving people a space to come and to check in with each other. As the days passed the needs changed and teams adapted, some returning to BAU while others continued to support communities. There was a focus on taking care of the psychosocial needs of our own teams. It was heartening to see the emphasis on this from leadership teams and the recognition of the need for flexibility with the challenges people faced even just getting to and from work in the subsequent weeks and months. Anyway, the TLDR version: It made me immensely proud to work with such a dedicated team of health workers who went above and beyond to serve their community in a time of crisis. It’s amazing the things you can feel emotional about. This photo is of the bridge I crossed on the way to work almost every day for the best part of a decade. Connecticut hospitals and health systems are building a healthier state, and their many contributions to the community transcend hospital walls. Hospitals are developing opportunities to drive regional transformative change in community health, care delivery, and health equity. 🏥 Through community benefit programs that encompass a wide range of services, hospitals are collaborating with local organizations to address housing, food insecurity, transportation, diaper insecurity, and employment.
