Yesterday was an incredible day spent with the dynamic team at Williams and White Equipment! Justin Williams, PEng. answered my call out for a board or executive team to take out into the wilderness for the day to work on self-discovery, communication, resilience, and alignment of mission, vision, and values, as part of my doctoral research. Using the power of appreciative inquiry, we embraced fun challenges, became more aligned with the company's mission, vision, and values, learned about ourselves and our communication skills. We also explored the importance of how we communicate feedback, discovered how to recognize stress in ourselves and others, and acquired valuable techniques to reduce stress. The result? A team armed with actionable steps to nurture a culture built on empathy, open communication, innovation, fun, entrepreneurship, excellence, growth, quality, integrity, collaboration, and safety. It's inspiring to witness this commitment to growth and unity. Huge thanks to Dr. Peter Crow for generously sharing his time in whistle stop trip to Brisbane. The conversation was incredible, Peter challenged us to look to performance, alignment of purpose, understanding of the role, clarity of information requirements in the papers and cognitive diversity at the Board. Key takeaways include #Boardcraft - The art of board work; it's not science it's about people. Recognising that the Board is a group of people who are gathering together and as such they will bring their expertise, experiences, their challenges and biases, as humans they may also bring the things which have occurred that day in the run up to that meeting. The word “Governance” has a rich history tracing back to its Greek origins of steering guiding and piloting (to some goal / purpose). Therefore, the Job of the board is to make big and strategic decisions to guide and steer the organisation towards it's strategy, it’s Performance. This is a balance, and if the majority of focus is on conformance then the Board misses the opportunity to steer towards performance.
